“They’ll always push their luck. Back then, they used their numbers and your grandparents’ favoritism to grab everything your dad left behind. Now they’re just trying to run the same play all over again.”

“If you let them get even the tiniest opening, you’ll never get rid of them. You especially can’t let them into your company. Once they’re in, they’ll start building their own little team and before you know it, you’re just the boss in name only.”

“The company isn’t just yours now. If they show up looking for trouble, Barbara and Linda will step in and shut them down. Especially Linda, she basically owns this city.”

Isabella shrugged. “There’s no way I’d let them into my company. That’s just not happening. This time, they’re getting a real lesson. Now they know I’m not someone they can push around. They’ll back off a bit.”

“Harold, you don’t have to worry about me. I’m really not the same Isabella I used to be. The old me died the night I married Ethan.”

That night was when she’d come back to life.

Harold smiled at her. “You really have changed. You never used to have this kind of confidence. You were always so patient, no matter what happened with the Lane family or anyone else, you just swallowed it all.”

“I used to think you were weak and helpless. After you married Ethan and we started seeing each other more, I realized I was wrong about you. You were pretending the whole time, and you pulled it off perfectly.”

“None of us ever guessed what you were really like.”

Isabella thought to herself, The old me really was patient. A champion at putting up with things. I learned it from my mom. I wasn’t strong, or confident. Even when I argued with Natalie and put on a tough act, deep down, I had no faith in myself. I was scared all the time.

But after dying and coming back, everything looked different. She’d figured out so much, and she’d changed.

Isabella braced herself for a long battle.

She changed the subject. “Your mom came over again.”

“She told me your grandma wants to see me, and invited me to dinner at your place this weekend. I said no for this weekend, but told her I’d come next weekend as Barbara’s friend instead.”

“My mom and uncle just got back, so I want to spend some time with them first.”

Harold smiled, then quickly added, “Isabella, I swear I had no idea my mom was coming to see you. I didn’t put her up to it.”
