“I already told my family how I feel. Liking you, chasing after you, that’s all on me. I don’t need their help, and there’s no way I’ll let them get in the way.”
“I guess my mom saw what happened with Jesse’s mom and Laura. Jesse’s mom went to talk to Laura, and somehow Jesse and Laura just ended up together after that. My mom probably wanted to try the same thing, just to help me out.”
“She really means well. She’s always told me that as long as I’m happy, that’s enough for her. It’s my life, my choice who I spend it with. She never forces anything, at most she’ll give me a little advice. Whether I take it or not, that’s up to me.”
Honestly, the Carter family is pretty open-minded. Except for Salome, who thinks Isabella’s background isn’t good enough for Harold, everyone else is fine. And Salome’s old and not in the best health, so what she thinks doesn’t really matter much these days.
Isabella smiled. “I know.”
“Harold, I might not be able to give you what you want. Is it really worth it, putting so much effort into me?”
“What if I just want to date and never get married again? Or what if I never want to get married at all?”
Harold looked at her. “I don’t care if it’s worth it. I just know I like you.”
Isabella let out a soft sigh. “I just worry that you’ll miss out on someone better because of me. Why not try meeting other people? Go on a few dates, just to see if you click with anyone else?”
“Ethan’s still hanging on, and even though I’ll never get back together with him, it’s probably impossible for us to completely cut each other off.”
The truth was, even Isabella didn’t know what the future with Ethan might look like.
“Isabella, don’t try to push me to someone else. I don’t want to date anyone else, and I don’t need to. I like you, and that’s that. Someone else might be wonderful, but she wouldn’t be you. We just… fit. I don’t have a reason for liking you. My heart just… chose you. I fell in love, simple as that.”
“I’ll go open the gate.”
Cynthia stood up and headed to the entrance, her brother and sister-in-law right behind her.
She spotted Harold’s car and didn’t feel the least bit surprised. She opened up the gate for him, thinking to herself that Isabella and Harold were bound to end up together sooner or later.
The thought of Harold as her son-in-law made her smile. She was even more pleased with Harold’s family—there wasn’t a thing to complain about.
From next door, Stephanie heard the commotion and came out of her house. She’d already told Cynthia she wanted to join them for dinner. Eating alone just felt too lonely, and she liked the livelier atmosphere.
In truth, she was there to keep an eye on Isabella for her eldest grandson. She was worried that while he was away on a business trip, things between Harold and Isabella might get serious in a hurry. If that happened, her grandson’s chances of winning Isabella back and remarrying her would get even slimmer.
