She’d actually been inside that villa once, in another life. Back then, it still belonged to the Churchill family. The two families were neighbors, so whenever Edward’s family came back to stay, there were always chances to visit.
Isabella used to drop by next door, chat with Mrs. Churchill, and sometimes play cards together. Mrs. Churchill had even tried to give her advice, though she’d done it in a roundabout way, telling Isabella to stop butting heads with Natalie all the time. The more she clashed with Natalie, the more Ethan pulled away from her, and the more their marriage suffered. In the end, it just wasn’t worth it.
Mrs. Churchill told her to focus on being good to Ethan. After all, people have hearts. If Isabella was kind to him and did what a wife should, Ethan would notice and eventually treat her better. That, Mrs. Churchill said, was the real way to outshine Natalie.
But Isabella hadn’t listened. She couldn’t stand the way Ethan spoiled Natalie, or the way Natalie kept provoking her, over and over. Every time, she fell for Natalie’s traps, and every time, she ended up hurt.
After the divorce, she moved out of Ethan’s villa and never saw Mrs. Churchill again. Not that she could—Mrs. Churchill had passed away.
Isabella and Stephanie walked out of the villa together. Isabella paused to close the gate behind them, then caught up with Stephanie as they headed toward Ethan’s new place.
They didn’t talk at first. It wasn’t until they’d stepped inside Ethan’s new home that Stephanie finally broke the silence. “So, do you like Harold now?”
Isabella answered, “Harold’s a great guy. I really enjoy spending time with him. He treats me with respect and understands me.”
Stephanie let out a sigh, though she kept it to herself. Everything Harold did right, Ethan just never seemed able to do.
Out loud, Stephanie said, “Harold really is a good man. Ethan’s mom always liked him. She even wanted Sophia to marry him, but Sophia wasn’t interested. She said Harold was too old for her, and Ethan agreed.”
“Ethan said Harold would never go for someone as pampered as Sophia.”
Dylan didn’t even come close to meeting her standards.
Maybe Dylan knew Linda was hard to get, because he never actually tried anything, even though he was interested. He couldn’t treat Linda like he did all his other girlfriends. Money and expensive gifts meant nothing to her.
Stephanie spoke up, “There’s no way Jennifer would ever approve of Dylan, either. He’s way older than Sophia.”
“I like to think I’m open-minded, but I’d never want Sophia to end up with someone like Dylan. He’s ruthless. Sophia might be a little wild and arrogant, but she’s actually pretty naive. She’s just not cut out for the Charles family.”
A girl like Sophia wouldn’t last a single episode in a palace drama.
