Isabella was gone for three whole days.
During those three days, the George family kept showing up outside her company, hoping to catch a glimpse of her, but she was nowhere to be found. The security guard said Isabella was away on a business trip. They didn’t believe him at first, but when they saw Laura running things at the office, they finally accepted she was really gone.
Isabella came home on Friday evening. She'd barely stepped through the door when her phone rang. It was Harold.
“Harold,” she answered, dropping her suitcase and sinking onto the sofa.
“Are you back?” His voice was warm and steady.
“Yeah, I just got home,” she said. “What’s up?”
There was a pause, then Harold asked, “Can I take you out to dinner? I can come pick you up right now.”
“Sure.” Isabella didn’t even think about saying no.
“Where are you? If you’re still at the office, I’ll head over.”
“I’m tired from the trip, so don’t worry about driving. I’ll come get you,” Harold said. He assumed she was still at work.
Isabella didn’t argue. If he wanted to come pick her up, she’d let him.
Half an hour later, Harold showed up. He brought flowers for Isabella and gifts for Cynthia and the others.
Cynthia smiled as she took the gifts. “Harold, you’re too thoughtful. Every time you come by, you bring us something.”
Zachary laughed. “With you and Isabella always caring about me and bringing me things, if I didn’t get better, I’d feel guilty.”
“Harold, sit down and have some water,” Cynthia said, waving him over. “Isabella’s upstairs changing. She told us to have you wait a minute.”
Harold set the flowers down and waited for everyone else to sit before taking his seat. That thoughtful gesture made Cynthia even more pleased. He respected them and treated them like family.
Cynthia found herself comparing Harold to her former son-in-law. Ethan used to call her “Mom” and acted polite, but he always kept his distance. There was never any real respect. If he couldn’t respect Isabella, how could he respect Cynthia?
No matter how much she’d once liked Ethan, that didn’t matter if Isabella wasn’t happy. Harold was just better for her. Cynthia was sure of it.
Even now, with Ethan working hard to win Isabella back and even Stephanie stepping in to help him, Cynthia’s heart still leaned toward Harold.
