After I Stopped Loving Him novel Chapter 1073

Isabella scoffed. "You tell me, Jordan. Did we ever have a real bond? I used to look up to you when we were younger. But no matter how hard I tried to please you, you despised me. You made it very clear that you weren't my family."

"So I stopped trying. During all those years I lived under your roof, I was just a free maid to your family. I didn't even have my basic dignity. How could I ever presume to treat you like a brother?"

Jordan's voice softened considerably. "When you first moved in, I really did see you as a younger sister. You were such a cute kid... I liked having you around. But then..."

He trailed off. They had spent twenty years under the same roof, but they certainly didn't share any warm memories.

And that was almost entirely due to his own abysmal treatment of her.

Just as Isabella said, she had been treated like a glorified servant. Jordan had monopolized Cynthia's attention, forbidding her from showing any maternal affection toward her own daughter.

"Isabella... I'm sorry."

It was the only thing he could think to say.

He knew a simple apology wouldn't erase years of torment.

And he knew Isabella wouldn't forgive him.

"But regardless, I wanted to thank you for this time. Thank you for telling me the truth. If you hadn't, I'd still be playing the oblivious, cheated husband. If that baby isn't mine, I would have ended up raising some other guy's kid like a total sucker."

"Don't thank me," Isabella said coolly. "I only did it out of respect for Jackson. He wasn't exactly warm to me, but the Lane family's money did put food on my table and paid for my education. I couldn't let Jackson get conned into raising a stranger's grandson."

"I figured you'd say you just wanted to make my life with Natalie a living hell."
