The rain didn't stop by evening.
In fact, it only grew heavier.
The air, despite it being summer, was damp and cold.
When the streetlights came on, their dim yellow glow illuminated a curtain of rain.
Evelyn and Isabel were sharing a room, tucked into bed after their showers.
She asked, "Is he really going to kneel all night?"
Isabel was looking at some data Felix Lane had sent to her phone and didn't answer.
Evelyn nudged her.
Isabel just hummed in response.
Evelyn didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "You're feeling conflicted, aren't you?"
"Come on, talk to me. I can't figure you out lately, and it's not like there's anything we can't talk about."
"Even if you still have feelings for Adrian, I won't judge you."
"I get it."
Isabel finished reading the message on her phone and sent a reply to Felix Lane before setting it aside. "Get what?"
Evelyn said, "Love is the one thing in this world you can't control. Who you like, who you end up marrying, the kind of heartbreak you suffer… it's all fated."
Isabel didn't respond to that. Instead, she walked to the window and looked down.
The yard was well-lit with enough lamps to see the path clearly.
Her parents must have installed them so their daughter could always see her way home.
Which was why she saw the figure collapse so clearly.
"What happened? It's just a summer rain, that shouldn't be enough to do this, right? He seems to be in good shape."
Isabel grabbed an umbrella and went out.
Adrian hadn't eaten all day. He'd been kneeling on the hard gravel, and in such a heavy downpour, even an umbrella would have been useless. Not to mention, he was still recovering from his internal injuries.
Even the strongest man would have collapsed.
But he wasn't unconscious. He was likely just exhausted, his mind finally giving out.
