When Isabel returned to her villa in Aurelia City, Oliver and Edmund vied to dote on her.
They brought her water, fed her fruit, and gave her leg and back massages.
Evelyn teased, “Even a queen doesn’t get this kind of treatment.”
Isabel stopped the two boys fussing around her. “That’s enough. Go on and play.”
Figuring the adults had things to discuss, they went off to play.
Julian finished a phone call and asked her, “How many days are you staying?”
Isabel countered, “What did you two talk about last night?”
“That’s guy talk. Not for a woman like you to hear.”
“Fine.”
Julian reached over, speared a piece of apple from the fruit platter the boys had cut for her, and popped it in his mouth. Then he asked, “Are you still going to marry me?”
Isabel had a feeling she knew what he and Adrian had discussed.
“Why wouldn’t I? I’ve already accepted the Reed family’s bride price.”
“Give me a break. The old man told me everything. He only did that to help you get away from Adrian. Since you can’t get away from him anyway, he gave you those things freely. You don’t have to marry me.”
Isabel paused, then asked seriously, “Will you blame me? Or think I’m pathetic?”
Julian wanted to say that when it came to being pathetic, no one could beat him.
He still hadn’t managed to say what he truly felt, had he?
“It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve been pathetic. However, if I were to act as your big brother, I definitely wouldn’t make it easy for him. You’d better think about how you’re going to apologize to me later.”
Isabel fed him a piece of fruit. “Open up.”
Julian accepted it, clearly enjoying himself. “A small bribe like this won’t work.”
Isabel smiled. “Alright, I’ll remember that.”
Evelyn, who hadn’t understood a word, asked, “What kind of riddle are you two talking in?”
