Evander stiffened just a little, then turned to look at the woman behind him. His gaze settled on her anxious face. “What’s wrong?”
She opened her mouth, hesitated. “Um… what would you like for breakfast?”
“You’re making it for me?”
She nodded, eyes fixed intently on Evander, as if afraid he might glance away at any moment.
To Evander, her nervousness only made her look more endearing, vibrant in a way he couldn’t deny that he enjoyed.
“I’m not in a hurry.” He leaned in, his voice low and teasing at her ear. “I’ll eat tonight.”
Before Charlotte could react, he was already gone, slipping out with a look of quiet satisfaction.
Once the door clicked shut, Lana finally let out a shaky breath. She realized she’d nearly made a serious mistake and felt a pang of guilt. “Ma’am, I didn’t know those were… birth control pills. You and Mr. Howard haven’t had children yet—have you been taking these all along?”
“No.” Charlotte took back the little box. She’d planned to get rid of it herself that morning, but Lana had found it first. “Don’t worry about things between me and him.”
Thank God… she thought. At least Evander hadn’t seen.
“There’s one thing,” Charlotte said, her tone more serious than usual. “I need you to keep quiet about this. Can you do that?”
Lana could sense the gravity of the situation. She needed this job, so she knew when to keep her mouth shut. “I understand. I won’t tell Mr. Howard.”
…
Tricia arrived at the old manor to see the children, arms full of gifts for the nannies who took care of them.
She’d even brought something for Linette, but Linette refused it.
The other nannies, charmed by Tricia’s generosity, were all polite and chatty, answering any question she threw their way.
“I heard Evander’s wife was here yesterday?” Tricia asked casually.
One of the nannies smiled. “You mean Mrs. Howard? Yes, she was here—the old madam and Mrs. Howard called her over.”
