It was half-past nine when Charlotte got home. Flushed, she hurried upstairs, only to run into Sean in the hallway.
"Lottie, why are you back so late?" Sean asked, concern in his voice. It was the first time he'd seen her come home at this hour.
"Uh... I was just out having a late-night snack with a friend," she said, scratching her cheek. "Dad, you're still up?"
"I couldn't sleep," Sean replied, not pressing her further. "I'm going downstairs to make some coffee. You know me, I just don't feel right if I don't have some coffee."
"You're drinking coffee this late at night?"
"Don't worry, Dad's immune to it by now. I can drink tea and still sleep like a baby." Sean smiled and headed downstairs.
Charlotte suspected something was troubling her father, but she knew he wouldn't tell her even if she asked. She decided she would ask her brother about it tomorrow.
...
The next morning, Sean had already left for his morning exercise, leaving only Charlotte and Wesley at the breakfast table.
"Brother, has Dad been dealing with anything stressful lately?"
Wesley picked up a piece of toast and spread jam on it. "Why do you ask?"
"I saw Dad last night, and he seemed to have a lot on his mind..." She trailed off for a moment. "I'm just a little worried."
He thought for a moment, then chuckled. "Well, I wouldn't call it stressful, exactly. But if there is something, it's probably..."
His gaze settled on Charlotte. "It's about you."
"Me?"
"Dad doesn't know that Evander is Mr. Evander. And grandfather is intent on setting you up with Mr. Evander. For some reason, the old man is desperate to secure an alliance with the Chase family. I can't figure out why."
Charlotte fell silent. The Rayburn patriarch's schemes always seemed to prioritize profit over family. And yet, on the day Kate died, she had seen a flicker of genuine grief on his face. And when Hulda and Quincy's affair was exposed, if he had truly been ruthless, he would have cast his son out of the family. Instead, his face had been a mask of fury and disappointment.
She, too, wanted to understand what the Rayburn patriarch was really thinking.
