If she hadn't insisted on eavesdropping, if she hadn't been discovered… perhaps Wesley wouldn't have been dragged into this.
Sean placed a hand on her shoulder. "Lottie, I don't blame you. Don't beat yourself up." He frowned. "This business with Shane is more shocking than I could have imagined. I need to go back and ask your grandfather some questions. As for Wesley…" Sean's jaw tensed, and he was silent for a long moment. "I have to trust in his intelligence to navigate this. Besides… Shane grew up with him. I hope that history means something, that she won't hurt him."
Charlotte was taken aback. She recalled that Shane had always treated Wesley differently from the others. Perhaps that was the only thing they could bet on now.
Sean hurried back to the family estate, while Charlotte went to find Evander. She hadn't wanted to trouble him, but right now, he was her only hope.
On the way, she received a call from Vera. She had discovered that a joint project between a Rayburn Group subsidiary and Nexum Company six months ago had been negotiated by a new shareholder at Nexum. Moreover, the Rayburn Group had been aware and both parties had signed the contract.
"A new shareholder at Nexum?" Charlotte asked quickly.
"Yes. The new shareholder's name is Shane."
It all clicked into place. Shane had joined Nexum Company long ago. That's how she knew about the financial loopholes in the project—she was involved. But at the time, Wesley probably hadn't known about her involvement.
Charlotte parked in front of the hotel, walked straight into the lobby, and used the spare key card Evander had given her for his private elevator to go up to the penthouse suite.
She had barely knocked when the door swung open. Before she could react, a large hand pulled her inside. She found herself pinned against the door by Evander's tall frame. He lowered his head, his lips and nose brushing against the side of her neck. She flinched away from the tickling sensation.
"Evander… you… have you been drinking?" The smell of alcohol on him surprised her. Why was he drinking in the middle of the day?
