Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 650

Three days after the Rayburn engagement party, no major scandal had erupted. Word was that Mr. Rayburn had sent representatives to apologize and deliver gifts to all the invited guests. Everyone simply treated the occasion as a happy union between the Rayburn and Chase families; as for who the groom was, that was the Rayburns' private affair.

Meanwhile, in the three days since she'd received Hiram's message, Evander hadn't replied to a single text or made a single call.

But more than worrying about him, she was worried about Grandma Rosemary.

Sean noticed Charlotte's anxiety and brought it up at dinner. "If you're worried, you can go and see for yourself."

She paused, then looked up, having considered this for a long time. "I was just about to talk to you about that..."

"I know," Sean said with a wave of his hand. "You couldn't bring yourself to ask, so I'm bringing it up for you. Even though I'm not thrilled about you going to the Capital."

He sighed and continued, "But I was thinking, you grew up in the Capital. Maybe you'd want to go back and visit."

Charlotte put down her fork and bowl. "While I'm there, I was also planning to see Hiram."

"Hiram?" Sean pondered. "Your adoptive parents' son?"

She nodded. "I'm the only family he has left now. I'm his sister in name, and I've been his sister for so many years. I should go back and see him."

Sean smiled and nodded. "That's a good idea." Then a thought occurred to him. "If he's open to it, you could always recommend him for a position at your brother's company. It would be easier to look after him that way."

"Pulling strings, are we?" Charlotte asked with a frank smile. "I'll ask him if he's interested."

Sean suddenly grew serious. "In this day and age, there are plenty of capable people who can't catch a break. The foundations built by one generation are meant to benefit the next; that's an opportunity many families never have. So, for ordinary people, pulling strings can be a lifeline. After all, not every talented person meets the right mentor."

Charlotte immediately understood her father's meaning and nodded. "Okay."

Charlotte's heart suddenly clenched. "A funeral? Whose funeral?"

"The Jensen matriarch's, of course. Oh, it's not surprising you don't know. The news hasn't been widely publicized; not many locals even know. I just found out today myself," the driver said, chatting idly as he drove, treating it as casual conversation with his passengers.

He was completely oblivious to the change in his passengers' expressions and continued, "It was quite a shock, really. I heard the Jensen matriarch and her daughter-in-law were in an accident on the way to the airport. The matriarch was killed on the spot, and her daughter-in-law is still in the ICU. Rumor is she might be in a vegetative state. Man, for a rich family like that... good thing they have money. For a normal family, the medical bills would bankrupt them..."

She couldn't hear the rest of what the driver said. The moment she heard "the Jensen matriarch was killed on the spot," a buzzing filled her ears, and her mind went completely blank, as if it had shut down.

Judd saw the color drain from her face and instinctively reached for her. "Charlotte..."

She couldn't speak. An intense, indescribable wave of shock flooded her brain. Her body began to tremble uncontrollably, and a sharp, twisting pain shot through her lower abdomen.

As her vision blurred, the last thing she heard was Judd's frantic voice. "Charlotte!"
