When Charlotte woke up again, she was in a hospital. As she lay on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, Judd walked in. "You're awake."
She rubbed her temples and sat up. "What... what happened to me?"
Judd sat down in the visitor's chair. "You're a doctor. You know better than anyone that you shouldn't get so emotional while you're pregnant, don't you?"
Charlotte froze, looking at him in shock. "What did you say?"
He frowned for a moment before replying, "You didn't know you were six weeks pregnant?"
Charlotte instinctively touched her stomach. With everything going on with the Rayburns, it had never occurred to her that her missed period was because she was pregnant.
She was completely unprepared for a pregnancy...
Besides, her past check-ups had shown that she had difficulty conceiving.
And of all times, it had to be now.
Judd watched her expression and guessed that she truly hadn't known. He hesitated, then said, "You shouldn't go to the Howard estate. You need to take care of yourself right now."
Charlotte lowered her gaze and was silent for a moment. "No, I still have to go," she said. "My marriage to Evander is still legally valid, which means I'm still a Howard daughter-in-law... Even if I didn't want to go for myself, for Grandma Rosemary... I have to."
Even after hearing the terrible news, Charlotte couldn't believe that the matriarch was gone. The moment she had left the Capital had unknowingly been their final farewell.
Her vision blurred instantly, and just as tears were about to fall, she turned her face away.
Judd looked away, not pointing out her distress. "I'll go with you."
Jacques's lips tightened, but he didn't speak.
The Sutherland patriarch patted his shoulder comfortingly. "This can't be easy for you."
Jacques lowered his gaze, his expression weary. "Thank you, Father."
Ilse Sylvan Howard and Jensen stood by with differing expressions, but both wore a look of detached indifference. They were especially relieved to learn that the Sutherlands did not intend to interfere in the Howard family's affairs.
Just then, the crowd behind them parted. Everyone turned to see Charlotte and Judd walking in.
Lilith's eyes lit up at the sight of Judd, but when she saw he was with Charlotte, the joy on her face quietly faded.
Her subtle change in expression was noticed by Genevieve Howard.
