Chapter 539 Finally Awake

Finished

No matter how she let it out, it still couldn’t chase away the storm inside her-grief and warmth tangled together into something too big to hold.

“Amelia.”

Right then, Amelia-crushed under the weight of it-suddenly fell into a warm, familiar embrace.

That familiar clean, cool scent calmed her instantly.

“Amelia, don’t cry. This will pass. I’m here.”

The one holding her was Jeremy.

Walter had been afraid she’d spiral alone-break down, get trapped in it, and never climb back

out.

So, he’d called Jeremy and had him come over.

Amelia clung to him, crying harder than she ever had in her life.

She wanted to run to her father right now and talk to him properly—stop being that cold, sharp-tongued daughter who’d hurt him.

She regretted how she’d spoken so little whenever she saw him, refusing to say even one extra word-refusing to call him “Dad.”

He’d died without hearing her say “Dad” again. He must’ve carried that regret to the end, right?

But no matter what she did now, he would never hear it.

She couldn’t argue with him anymore. Couldn’t clear up the misunderstanding.

She couldn’t find him anymore-ever.

“I don’t have a dad anymore.”

Those few words made Jeremy’s eyes go red, too.

He knew that feeling. He knew exactly how much it hurt.

Because back then, it had happened to him, too.

His father disappeared-and in the end, was officially declared dead.

how to be a person.

He’d been just as miserable, lost, and helpless.

He never imagined the same pain would hit the woman he loved.

Jeremy’s chest tightened with grief-and guilt.

If he’d been more careful back then—if he’d looked harder into Raymond’s situation-—maybe he would’ve noticed something was off.

“From now on, you’ll always have me. The Currans are your family,” Jeremy said, gently patting

her back.

If the Nygards truly changed and Amelia wanted to go back, he would support her.

If she wanted nothing to do with them, then he’d be her lifelong shield-and the Currans would be her home.

The Nygards.

“Dad’s funeral arrangements are set for tomorrow. All the relatives have been informed.”

“What about Amelia…?” Maxwell asked Marcelo.

“I’ve already messaged her, but she hasn’t replied,” Marcelo said.

At that moment, only the three brothers were left in the house.

Their father was gone-completely gone.

Their mother was still in the hospital, and they didn’t even dare tell her yet.

Their biological sister had long since grown disgusted with this family and pulled away.

The Nygards now were nothing like the lively, bustling family they used to be.

People only wake up after they’ve smashed their heads bloody against reality.

Only then do they realize how wrong they were.

“Don’t rush her. Don’t pressure her. Don’t force her. No matter what she chooses, we have no right to blame her.”

Miguel still hadn’t fully recovered, but his voice was steady and firm.

He felt like he’d been the worst of them-the one who’d learned the most brutal lesson.

Every time it got quiet at night, and he remembered what he’d done, he wanted to slap himself -over and over.

He’d been the idiot-fooled by an adopted “sister,” played like a toy-yet he’d still stood on some moral high ground and accused his real sister.

No family could possibly be as stupid as theirs-every single one of them spun in circles by an adopted girl.

Even when they believed she was their father’s illegitimate child, they still couldn’t stand in their mother’s shoes-couldn’t protect her, couldn’t comfort her, couldn’t guide her through it.

They still loved and trusted that damned adopted girl without hesitation.

They’d been stupid to the point of insanity-like they’d been cursed.

They’d even nearly lost their lives.

That woman was a backstabber you could never raise right-no matter how much you gave her

And in the end, she and her mother still stabbed them in the back.

Now, their father was gone. Their mother was shattered. Their biological sister wouldn’t acknowledge them—wouldn’t acknowledge this family.

The family was scattered like loose sand, and the Nygard Group was leaderless.

Maxwell stood by the window, staring at the gray sky outside, his fingers unconsciously twisting the edge of the curtain.

His voice was hoarse, unable to hide it. “Marcelo and Miguel are right. We wronged her.”

And now, Maxwell was finally awake.
