Maeve had foreseen that Benjamin would face a life-threatening crisis shortly after the new year, she just hadn't expected it to happen this quickly.
Back when she had Andres arrange that dinner party, she had openly mentioned she had a very special gift prepared for Benjamin.
That gift was this exact, custom-engineered heart.
Dr. Evans couldn't hide his professional excitement.
Opening Benjamin up again for a second transplant was incredibly risky.
But he had consulted with Maeve prior to this. She had promised that this newly advanced experimental heart would not only last a staggering fifty years, but it would also allow Benjamin to live a completely normal, active life.
It was poised to be a monumental miracle in modern medicine, and Dr. Evans was thrilled to assist her in the OR.
His absolute faith in Maeve stemmed from the undeniable fact that she was the sole reason Benjamin had survived this long in the first place.
"Maeve, I've prepped the operating room exactly as Zane requested," Dr. Evans assured her. "The entire surgical team is scrubbed in and ready."
Maeve slipped off her coat and handed it to Andres.
"This will take roughly five hours," she told him softly. "If you're tired, go get some rest. Don't wait up for me."
Taking her coat, Andres gently wrapped his fingers around her wrist.
"I'm not leaving," he said firmly. "I'll be right out here until you're done."
Maeve gave him a silent nod. Pausing for a second, she added one last reassurance.
"Don't worry. A minor procedure like this is a walk in the park for me."
Without waiting to see his reaction, she turned and strode briskly toward the OR with Dr. Evans and the medical staff.
Daisy and Zane were already pacing anxiously outside the double doors.
Seeing Maeve approach, a wave of intense guilt washed over Daisy's face.
"I'm so sorry," she choked out. "I couldn't protect him."
