Without giving Maeve a chance to speak, Luka barreled on, voice hard as steel. "You're coming with me to the county office right now. We're transferring the deed back into my name."
"And don't give me that crap about how it's your mother's memory. I don't want to hear a word of it."
"You came to Aethelburg for money. Besides the two hundred million I already gave you, I'll add another two hundred million."
"The day the house is back in my name, the remaining two hundred million hits your account."
"Four hundred million. You'll never have to worry for the rest of your life. As your father, I've done more than enough."
Maeve widened her eyes like she'd just had a revelation. "So the house my mom left me comes with a secret that big."
"A wealth-attracting setup? Does that mean if I live there, money will just... flow to me?"
She smiled, sweet and sharp. "Good for my mom. Visionary. Strategic."
"If it's that good, forget two hundred million. Even two billion wouldn't make me sell."
Luka's face mottled with anger. "Maeve, don't push your luck. What do you need some wealth charm for?"
"While you're still pretty, go marry a decent man."
"With that kind of money, even if he leaves you one day, you'll have something solid to fall back on."
Maeve actually laughed—cold, incredulous. "Luka, don't use that tiny sliver of blood relation between us as an excuse to keep lowering the bar in front of me."
"From the day the deed went into my name, it became mine. And it will stay mine."
"Touch my house, and I'll make you pay."
She walked through the gate.
