Divorce Failed My Wife's Secret Identities Shock the World novel Chapter 14

Maeve tossed out, "Ma'am, he hits me."

The mediator blinked.

So did Andres, shooting Maeve a hard, incredulous look.

Maeve leaned into it with wounded conviction. "He cheated during the marriage. Now he wants me out so he can move his mistress in. He beats me every day, and my face is still swollen."

The mediator's eyes flicked over Maeve's cap and mask like puzzle pieces clicking together.

"I see..." she said carefully. "And the division of assets?"

Maeve said, "He wants me to leave with nothing."

The mediator looked at Andres with new disgust.

The man was dressed in money from head to toe, designer suit, even diamond cufflinks, yet he was forcing his wife to walk away empty-handed?

The moment they stepped out of the room, Andres blocked Maeve's path.

"I cheated, I'm making you leave with nothing, and I beat you?"

Maeve couldn't retreat; he was too close. The faint scent of cologne curled into her space, annoyingly pleasant, adding to his already unfair charm.

She stayed calm. "It was strategic. So she'd stop lecturing us."

"And the strategy was ruining my reputation to shut her up?"

"I care about results," Maeve said. "Not the process."

Andres was speechless.

Maeve tilted her head. "Are we still getting divorced?"

The question yanked Andres back into focus.

"Yes," he said sharply. He had no interest in wasting time on this.

"Then let's make it quick."

They each produced a copy of their marriage certificate.

Outside, thunder cracked, so loud it seemed to shake the building.

A jolt of electricity skated across Maeve's certificate. Pain stung her palm.

At the exact same moment, Andres flinched with the same sensation.

Andres leaned back, ankle over knee, and the room seemed to chill around him.

This had to be deliberate.

The clerk stared, stunned. What wife didn't know her husband's name?

He typed in Maeve's information. Her record popped up immediately.

"The system shows you registered your marriage last August. You are legally married."

"If you want to divorce without a certificate, you'll need to apply for a replacement marriage certificate first, then return to file."

Andres let out a sharp, humorless laugh. "We came here to get divorced. Not to get married again."

The clerk wiped his forehead. "I'm sorry, Mr. White. That's the legal procedure."

Maeve, practical as ever, asked, "How do we replace it?"

The clerk pointed toward the door. "You'll need to go through the marriage office process."

As soon as he finished speaking, another crack of thunder split the air, close enough to feel like it struck right overhead.
