James's expression twisted more and more with embarrassment.
"Understood, Minister Hugh," he said tightly. "I'll take my people and leave immediately."
Before he could finish, Maeve snatched the phone right out of his hand.
"I'm Maeve," she said flatly. "Who is this?"
James froze.
This girl—was she insane?
She'd just stolen a federal officer's phone and was talking to the person on the other end like she owned the line.
Minister Hugh was a rising powerhouse in politics. Even the Shepherd family treated him with careful respect.
The man on the other end paused. "Maeve. It's Hugh."
"Mr. Griffin said you ran into a little trouble," Hugh continued, his tone as casual as if he were discussing a dinner reservation. "He asked me to help smooth it over."
Maeve's eyes went cold. "Where is that old bastard? I want to see him. Now."
Hugh chuckled. "He'll show up when it's time. When it isn't, don't go looking."
"You played this one a bit too big," Hugh went on. "I'll handle the mess you left."
"Mr. Griffin also asked me to pass along a message: next time, don't be so naughty. Go live properly with the man he picked for you."
Then Hugh added, almost amused, "Your methods are a little extreme, but I'll say this—kid, you're impressive. No wonder Mr. Griffin spoils you."
"When there's a good opportunity," he finished, "I'll treat you to dinner and tea."
He hung up before Maeve could fire back another question.
Maeve slammed the phone back into James's hand and hissed, "Useless pawn."
James caught it on instinct, still dazed. "…"
He couldn't wrap his head around it.
The girl he'd almost hauled away as a suspect… could speak directly with Minister Hugh?
Andres had already read the shift in power.
He looked at James with icy satisfaction. "Mr. Shepherd. Still taking her?"
