Maeve started to roll out of bed, but Andres caught her arm.
Her eyes sharpened instantly. "What?"
Andres hesitated, then said, "Your suggestion last night… might actually work."
"What suggestion?"
"Having a baby."
Maeve slapped his hand away, shrugged on a thin silk robe, and looked back at him with cool disdain. "My place is too small to keep something as 'noble' as your bloodline."
Then she walked into the bathroom and slammed the door.
Andres stared at the closed door, then, unexpectedly, he laughed under his breath.
A dull irritation tightened in his chest.
So she was mad.
To keep the staff from realizing their marriage was secret, Andres and Maeve ate breakfast in a silence so coordinated it felt rehearsed.
Before Maeve moved in, Hans had already laid down the story: she was a distant relative of Mr. Andres, staying temporarily. The staff were to take good care of her and ask no questions.
Remi watched them discreetly. When she saw Mr. Andres making no effort to chat with Maeve, she drew her own conclusions.
So Mr. Andres didn't like this "relative."
Otherwise they wouldn't be sitting at the same table without even a single word.
No matter how old and wealthy the White family was, there were always a few poor relatives who tried to latch on shamelessly for benefits.
This Maeve, with a face she probably thought was pretty enough to earn special treatment… how naive.
Remi placed a fresh plate of fried eggs on the table, then said in a light, careful voice to Andres, "Miss Morales called about half an hour ago. She said she lost an earring last night—she's wondering if it might have fallen in your car. She asked if you'd take a look when you have time."
Andres's eyes flicked to Maeve.
Maeve was scrolling through the news on her phone, expression neutral, acting as if she hadn't heard a word.
Andres gestured for Remi to leave—message received.
Then he looked back at Maeve. She didn't look up, clearly uninterested in his business.
A dull irritation pressed at his ribs. He broke the silence. "Where are you going later?"
