"When the formation was set at this estate, we didn't hire the workers. My master only laid out the structural design."
"Dead cats and dogs near the fountain? That's obviously someone sabotaging things behind the scenes to ruin his reputation."
"When Master heard, it was a huge shock. That's why he sent the three of us to deal with it."
Ian's explanation was tight—logically sound, difficult to poke holes in.
The Luminary Order was famous in their world for protecting its reputation.
And they had no personal vendetta against the Whites. There was no obvious reason to plant something malicious into the estate's foundation.
Maeve's eyes locked onto Ian's. "And you are?"
It was rude—borderline hostile.
Ian looked like he'd swallowed a stone. "Ian Grover. Luminary Order."
Maeve nodded slowly. "I know someone I can't stand who also has the last name Grover."
"So from now on, don't talk to me."
"Wouldn't want me to start hating you too."
The room went dead.
Maeve, when she chose to be, could be spectacularly unreasonable.
Andres, watching, had a thought of his own.
When Maeve said she hated someone named Grover… did she mean Simon Grover?
As the tension thickened, Elijah cleared his throat.
"Mr. White—we came in good faith. Once this is settled, we need to report back to our master."
"Beginning and end—finishing what you start—is one of the Luminary Order's teachings."
"So for today's matter, we hope you'll allow us a chance to prove our innocence."
Andres glanced at Maeve, silently asking.
"Maeve. What do you think?"
None of the Luminary Order people were fools.
From Andres's tone and his attention, it was obvious Maeve carried serious weight with him.
Maeve rubbed her chin, putting on an exaggeratedly thoughtful look.
"Today was supposed to be my stage."
