It was nine-thirty by the time they left the manor.
For both Maeve and Andres, it had been a highly productive and entertaining weekend.
On the drive back to Azure Bay, Maeve decided to give Andres a heads-up.
"I'm probably going to meet up with Simon Grover tomorrow. I need to give him a straight answer about whether I'm taking the assistant gig at Lab C."
Sure enough, the blissed-out expression on Andres' face hardened slightly at the mention of Simon's name.
"So, what's your final answer?"
"I have to take it!"
"There's more than one Lab C in Aethelburg," Andres pointed out.
The White family owned research facilities that rivaled anything Lab C had to offer.
Maeve knew exactly what he meant, so she cut straight to the chase.
"I'm taking the job because I have a very specific goal."
Andres' interest was piqued. "Care to share?"
"I need to infiltrate their core team and pull some files."
Andres instantly picked up on the implication.
"Does this have something to do with your... next moves?"
Maeve kept it vague.
"Maybe. Probably. It's a toss-up right now. I'm not totally sure myself."
"The only way to know if I'm looking at the right puzzle pieces is to get inside and see what they have."
Andres frowned. "Simon Grover isn't an idiot. I highly doubt he's just going to hand you the keys to the kingdom."
Maeve smiled.
"Whether he gives me the opportunity or not is his business. Whether I get the intel or not is mine. The two aren't mutually exclusive."
In the driver's seat, Hans was once again blown away by Maeve's sheer audacity.
Lab C was a powerhouse in Stramont.
Simon Grover had single-handedly built a research empire that churned out innovations known to pretty much everyone in the country.
A guy like that didn't leave himself exposed.
Even though she didn't actually need him to play bodyguard.
She appreciated the hell out of the offer.
Up front, Hans couldn't shake the feeling that his boss was a changed man.
The old Mr. Andres was cold, ruthless, and absolutely dictatorial—especially when it came to women. You did not cross him.
If anyone had dared to defy him before, it would have ended in absolute disaster for them.
But ever since Maeve walked into his life, the dynamic had completely flipped.
Hans had a very strong feeling that in the near future, Maeve would be the one calling the shots in this relationship.
The second they walked through the door, Ella rushed over to give her report.
"Mr. Andres, Miss Vance. While you were gone, Natalia has been throwing an absolute fit."
Andres and Maeve exchanged a look, both easily guessing exactly why Natalia was melting down.
Andres scoffed. "Some people just never figure out where they stand."
The melodramatic acting, the calculated 'accidental' meetings, the twisted love-hate obsession...
