"I can't track down Mr. Griffin," Quinn said quickly, "but he can find me. He knows you've got a temper and you probably don't want to see him anytime soon, so he asked me to pass along a message."
He glanced at her, then recited it like he'd been warned not to improvise.
"Once The Binding is in place, not even Mr. Griffin can undo it. He wants you to live properly with Mr. Andres—stop trying to break the seal with shortcuts and tricks."
Maeve actually laughed, sharp and humorless.
"Shortcuts?" she said. "That old man has nerve. He binds me with The Binding and then lectures me about 'tricks'? What was he doing when he set it?"
Quinn chuckled like he was trying to talk her down. "He's doing it for your own good. We're all part of the Mystic Order. You know what your fate looks like—don't pretend you don't."
"Whether Mr. Andres is a good match in your eyes doesn't matter. If Mr. Griffin says you two fit, then you fit."
Maeve's voice went cold. "And if I insist on breaking The Binding?"
"It can't be broken."
"The old man's blood would break it."
Quinn shot her a look. "And you'd be willing to do that? He's the person who loves you most in this world. He's basically your father."
Maeve fell silent.
She could call him every ugly name in the book, teeth grinding with rage—but she knew the truth. She would never hurt him. Not in a way that couldn't be taken back.
Quinn's voice softened. "I know what happened a year ago wrecked you. But the dead don't come back. The ones who survive have to learn how to move forward. Maeve… you need to try to let it go."
A flash of killing intent flickered in her eyes. "I can't."
Quinn ruffled her hair. "Still the same hothead."
Maeve slapped his hand away. "Pull over up ahead. Let me out."
Quinn didn't slow down. "I've got a get-together lined up. Come have a drink, loosen up. I'll introduce you to a few people."
Maeve frowned. "Not interested."
"You want to survive in Aethelburg? Connections matter."
