Once out in the hallway, Simon practically interrogated her. "What did you do to 1152?"
A patient that Lab C's top researchers had completely written off as unsalvageable had just woken up after a weeks-long coma. Maeve had achieved what his entire state-of-the-art facility couldn't. He absolutely refused to believe it was just a coincidence.
Maeve fired back smoothly, "Is my seven-day contract with Lab C still valid or not?"
Simon paused, taken aback. "Of course it is."
Maeve crossed her arms. "The contract contains forty-seven clauses. Clause nineteen is explicitly clear: During the trial period, as long as my actions do not negatively impact Lab C's interests or reputation, I am authorized to use any method necessary to treat my patient. Furthermore, Lab C is strictly prohibited from intervening or questioning my treatment protocols."
She stepped closer, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Mr. Grover, it's right there in black and white. Storming down here to interrogate me—are you questioning my professional integrity, or are you preparing to unilaterally breach the contract?"
Simon was left entirely speechless. He had been so fiercely obsessed with uncovering the medical secret behind 1152's awakening that he had completely forgotten their legal agreement.
He quickly recovered. "Maeve, Lab C will not interfere with your decisions. I'm just asking on a personal level. 1152 is a highly critical case. Given his vitals, he shouldn't even be able to speak. If you pull his oxygen, he'll die instantly."
Yet, whatever medication Maeve had pumped into him had wrought an absolute miracle.
Maeve offered a simplified, elusive explanation. "Before I left yesterday, I gave him an adrenaline shot to ensure he'd make it past the twenty-four-hour mark. As for my ongoing treatment plan—that's highly classified."
Simon instantly caught on. "So, you trashed the security cameras."
Maeve put on a flawless, innocent face. "Mr. Grover, you wound me. I didn't even know there were cameras in that room."
