Maeve's expression grew dangerously dark. "Charlie's body was dismembered into seventeen pieces."
"Arms, fingers, legs, ears... they didn't even spare his nails."
Naomi shook her head, tears streaming down her face.
"Stop it, Maeve. Please, don't say anymore."
She deeply regretted bringing it up. It was like pouring acid onto Maeve's open wounds.
Maeve remained unmoved, her voice completely detached.
"It took me three full days to piece his body back together."
"No, actually, it wasn't complete. Charlie's heart was missing."
A chilling, broken smile crept onto Maeve's lips.
"I couldn't stand the thought of Charlie crossing into the next world with an incomplete body."
"Even if I have to tear the earth apart, I will find his missing heart."
By the time she finished, Maeve's emotional state was bordering on manic.
"When I find out who cut it out of him, I will make them pay a agonizing price. Ten times, a hundred times, a thousand times over."
Seeing that Maeve was spiraling, Naomi threw her arms around her friend, hugging her tightly to pull her out of the nightmare.
She couldn't even begin to imagine the suffocating wave of despair Maeve must have felt when she first saw Charlie's mutilated remains.
No wonder Maeve had vanished without a trace for a year.
Anyone who had endured such gruesome trauma would struggle to ever find their way out of the darkness.
"Maeve, I know you're devastated, but it's in the past now."
"If Charlie is watching over you, he wouldn't want you living in this endless agony."
Naomi's comforting words had absolutely zero effect.
Maeve's gaze turned predatory and cold, devoid of a single ounce of humanity.
"In the past? How could it ever be in the past?"
She shoved Naomi away.
