The question seemed to throw Donovan into a violent internal struggle.
Even though he was heavily hypnotized, his face contorted in agonizing pain.
Naomi lowered her voice.
"If Griffin really tampered with the memories of those involved back then, it won't matter how many times you put him under. He physically cannot give you the answer."
Relentless, Maeve pressed on. "Where is his heart right now?"
Donovan's expression grew even more strained.
It was as if the knowledge was right on the tip of his tongue, yet locked behind an impenetrable wall.
The culprit's name was completely sealed away, impossible to speak.
Maeve grew increasingly certain that Donovan and Benjamin Bright's complete silence about the past was directly tied to Griffin.
"Griffin, even if you move heaven and earth to keep the truth from me..."
"I will uncover exactly what happened. Whatever the cost."
Maeve leaned closer, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper.
"Answer me. Who took it?"
After a long, suffocating silence, Donovan suddenly choked out a string of numbers.
"076!"
Maeve and Naomi exchanged a sharp look.
"What does 076 mean?" Maeve demanded.
Like a broken record, Donovan just kept repeating the numbers over and over.
Because this was a secondary hypnosis session, the time limit was halved, giving Maeve a mere five minutes.
Once the five minutes expired, Donovan snapped awake.
When Maeve immediately moved to hypnotize him for a third time, Naomi physically intercepted her.
"Maeve, stop! Consecutive sessions won't just halve the time, The Backlash you suffer will multiply exponentially."
"Let it go. Please, just let it go."
Naomi absolutely refused to watch Maeve destroy herself on her watch.
But Maeve wasn't about to back down.
"Naomi, you know exactly who I am. I don't care about the methods, even if it costs me my life."
She could tolerate anything else in the world, but when it came to Charlie, restraint was not an option.
