Not long after Andres left, Maeve received a call from Parker Sterling.
The moment the line connected, she unleashed her frustration.
"Old guy, you finally decided to turn your phone on?"
A hearty chuckle echoed through the receiver.
"Come on, kid, don't be so quick to lose your temper."
Before she could fire back, he quickly pivoted. "You've arrived in Lumiere City, right?"
"You're meeting Pluto soon. Feeling a little nervous?"
She scoffed, rolling her eyes in exasperation.
"Why the hell would I be nervous? He's the one who should be sweating."
"If he hadn't swooped in and ruined my operation back then, things would have played out very differently. I hold grudges, you know."
"Sterling, give it to me straight. Who is Pluto in the real world?"
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line.
"The truth is, I don't know his real identity either."
"Like you, he's a very unique asset within Red Gate."
"Aside from your direct handlers, no one has the clearance to access your civilian files."
"Anyway, you're about to meet him face-to-face. I'll send the time and location to your inbox shortly."
"Try to keep that temper of yours in check. Think of the big picture."
"And make sure you complete the assignment."
"If you do a good job, I'll petition the higher-ups for maximum compensation. You'll be more than satisfied, I promise."
Meanwhile, inside a luxurious suite at the Lumiere City International Clubhouse, Benjamin Bright lay weakly against the pillows.
Despite the medication and injections, the crushing weight on his chest made every breath an agonizing chore.
Seeing his boss's pale, bloodless face, Zane couldn't help but interject.
"Mr. Bright, we really should get you to a hospital."
Zane was Benjamin's most trusted executive assistant and confidant.
"When you rejected Landon's peace offering because of Miss Vance, he obviously held a grudge."
"I have to admit, using Nevaeh was a brilliant move on his part."
"It drove a wedge between the White family in Aethelburg and the Nichols family in Gotham, while simultaneously turning you into a public laughingstock."
"We just don't have concrete proof yet that Nevaeh was the one who triggered your heart condition. For now, Nolan Nichols has her under tight protection."
"It's too risky for our people to make a move on her here in Lumiere City."
The thought of Nevaeh colluding with Landon to kill him made Benjamin want to crush them both with his bare hands.
The surge of fury made his breathing hitch and accelerate dangerously.
"Give me the pills," he choked out.
Zane scrambled to hand over the emergency heart medication.
"Mr. Bright, please. Let's just go to the hospital. If you keep pushing yourself, this isn't going to end well."
But Benjamin outright ignored the plea.
