Having skipped classes for a while, Maeve finally sat through two lectures at the university. As for what the professor actually said, she didn't absorb a single word.
For both classes, she sat in the back row, hunched over her laptop, working on cracking the encrypted files. The S-tier chip from The First Archives definitely lived up to its reputation; the security protocols were absolutely psychotic.
When the bell rang and the students filed out, Maeve remained in her seat, showing no intention of leaving.
"Maeve, want to grab lunch at the cafeteria?" It was Elena, one of the few friends Maeve had on campus.
Checking the time, Maeve realized it was almost noon and her stomach was rumbling. "Sure."
On the way to the cafeteria, Elena held up two fingers, winking conspiratorially. "A lot has happened while you were gone, but two major things stand out. Which one do you want to hear first?"
Still mentally battling the encryption, Maeve replied casually, "Whichever one you're most excited about."
Elena's face lit up. "The one I'm most excited about is the Esports Championship happening next weekend at the Aethelburg Science & Technology Center. You remember Connor, right? The guy I told you about? He's coming to Aethelburg next week to see me!"
Maeve arched an eyebrow. "To see you?"
Maeve shrugged. "Clearly, my existence means absolutely zero to you."
Elena flailed her hands. "Maeve, no, don't misunderstand! You and Connor hold the exact same weight in my heart! I just never expected the dates to clash!"
"Not only do they clash, but they're taking place in the exact same building. The Science & Technology Center," Maeve added.
Elena frantically pulled out her phone to check. "Oh my god, what are the odds? But wait! He's on the fourth floor, and you're on the fifth. And the timing! Your competition starts at 9:00 AM, and his match isn't until 11:00 AM."
