Maeve gave Simon a dismissive, perfunctory smile.
"You make it sound like I did it on purpose."
To be fair, she absolutely did.
The moment Simon had stepped onto campus, Maeve had locked onto him as a prime target.
He was such a convenient weapon; it would have been a waste of resources not to use him against Leah.
Simon cleared his throat.
"You know that I know you were using me. Just admit it."
"You knew I was using you, yet you eagerly trotted over to let it happen," Maeve shot back.
"Which tells me you have a deep, underlying obsession with being treated like a tool."
"Since you were so desperate to be used, how could I deny you?"
Simon had to hand it to her; her sharp tongue was undefeated.
"Fine, your logic is twisted, so you win."
He had come to Aethelburg with a real purpose today.
"You got to use me, and those blind fools learned their lesson."
"Now, let's talk about the contract. Lab C needs you."
Maeve had zero interest in the topic.
"I've already made myself perfectly clear. My principles don't align with your lab's."
"I appreciate the gesture, but the contract is off the table."
With that, she turned and headed straight toward the school gates.
Simon fell into step right beside her.
"You mentioned before that you wanted to run your own projects. I'm offering you that chance right now."
"As long as you agree to sign, you can take your pick of any project Lab C is working on."
Maeve didn't slow her pace in the slightest.
"You clearly don't understand what 'conflicting principles' means."
"Survival of the fittest is an eternal truth."
Maeve stopped and looked at Simon, her eyes blazing with an undeniable, domineering intensity.
"Only the incompetent follow rules made by others."
"The capable create their own."
"The only eternal truth is that the winner becomes king, and the loser is cast aside."
"Since I have what it takes to be at the top, why should I follow stupid rules just to settle for bronze?"
Simon genuinely clapped his hands in admiration.
"I love that arrogant confidence of yours."
"Maeve, you can use Lab C as your stepping stone to the top."
"Sign with me, and I'll help you become the king of the peak, surrounded by flowers and applause."
Maeve finally slowed her steps.
She looked Simon up and down.
