Slade Thorne was speechless at Andres White's relentless interference.
"Why are you everywhere?"
Andres grabbed Maeve Vance's hand right in front of him.
"Maeve's business is my business."
Jasper Jett couldn't stand watching this any longer.
"Listen up, everyone. Do you really think you get to decide who stays and who goes?"
Slade finally found a target to vent his frustration on.
"You are coming back to Port Caspian with me today."
Jasper rolled his eyes at him.
"Just try and take me."
Slade shot to his feet, ready to lunge at Jasper, but Maeve raised a hand to stop him.
"Mr. Thorne, did you come to Aethelburg to get Jasper to represent you in Case 921?"
Slade stopped in his tracks, surprised that Maeve had seen right through his motives.
Andres and Jasper were also caught off guard by the mention of '921'.
Slade studied Maeve thoughtfully.
"We've never met before. How do you know so much about my situation?"
Maeve brushed it off. "That's not the point. Just tell me if you're looking for Jasper because of Case 921."
Case 921 was a massive financial scandal that had recently erupted, involving widespread bribery, embezzlement, and corporate espionage.
The case implicated numerous companies.
Slade's Trident Group was one of them.
If he didn't extricate his company from the mess soon, their stock would plummet, causing millions of dollars in catastrophic losses.
Slade dropped his previous arrogance and nodded.
"That's right. My other reason for finding him is indeed related to Case 921."
He looked at Jasper.
"If you help me settle this, I'll consider wiping our slate clean."
Slade's proposal only fueled Jasper's resistance.
During dinner, Andres gave Maeve a brief rundown of Slade's background.
Trident Group held a position in Port Caspian's business world equivalent to the top three families in Aethelburg.
The reason he crossed paths with someone like Slade had a lot to do with Slade's early years.
Despite Slade's current success, his earlier circumstances had been incredibly harsh.
Slade's father had died suddenly in an accident.
He left behind a wife who knew nothing about business and two young sons.
Slade's uncles coveted the vast fortune his father had left behind, so they joined forces to drive the mother and sons into the ground.
To survive, Slade's mother took her two children and lived a life on the run.
Fortunately, her maiden family provided some financial support, keeping them from dying on the streets.
In order to reclaim his stolen inheritance as quickly as possible, Slade went to Africa at a very young age to build his capital and network.
Facts proved that those who dared to fight for their future were never short on luck.
In just a few short years, Slade used his intelligence and ruthless methods to amass enough capital and connections to rival those who had wronged him.
It was during that time that Andres and Slade forged their bond.
