Maeve didn't turn around—just lifted a hand in a lazy wave to show she'd heard him.

Only after she left 1908 did Hans finally find his voice. "Mr. Andres… the divorce agreement with Ms. Vance was signed. Just like that?"

Andres took a sip of wine. "Get me everything you can on Maeve."

Hans reported truthfully. "Ms. Vance is Luka Morales's daughter from his first marriage to Serenity Vance. Back then, the Morales family had some money, but Serenity grew up in foster care—no known parents."

"In the third year of the marriage, Luka's current wife, Isla, used a pregnancy—twins, a boy and a girl—to secure her position."

When Hans got to the Morales connection, a personal edge crept into his voice.

"Not long ago, Luka approached Ms. Vance and tried to bring her back into the family—talked about making amends, promised inheritance and property division."

"In reality, their urgency has everything to do with Ansel—Anya's twin brother."

At the name, disgust flickered in Hans's eyes.

Ansel was the kind of rich kid who'd never been told no: reckless driving, fights, running with the worst crowd, bullying classmates for sport.

He'd even driven a girl to jump from a building. During the autopsy, they found she'd been pregnant—barely formed, but there.

If there was such a thing as justice in the universe, it was that Ansel had been struck down young by a severe illness. Without a kidney transplant soon, he wouldn't survive.
