Naomi grabbed the pre-prepared gifts from the trunk, keeping one for herself and shoving the other into Maeve's hands.
"You wanted to track down Nancy, right? I'm giving you a shortcut."
Naomi's words immediately caught Maeve's attention.
"What kind of shortcut?"
Naomi shot her a mysterious smile.
"You'll see in a minute."
And so, a bewildered Maeve was dragged into the Thornton family villa.
The villa's interior was lavishly decorated, and the mingling guests were all dressed to the nines.
As Naomi and Maeve arrived with their gifts, led in by the butler, a young woman approached them.
She was slender, though her features were rather plain, but she wore a welcoming smile.
The first thing to hit Maeve's senses was a peculiar fragrance.
Maeve noted it silently. That scent was definitely unusual.
"Naomi! I'm so glad you could make it to my party."
The woman then glanced at Maeve, her smile widening.
"If I'm not mistaken, you're Maeve Vance, the one who saved my brother's life?"
Maeve stared back in complete confusion.
Naomi quickly made the introductions.
"Maeve, this is the birthday girl herself. Mia Sutton, the third daughter of the Thornton family."
"As it turns out, you have some history with the Thorntons."
"Remember that guy whose heart stopped at Zero Bar a few months ago?"
"That was Miles Thornton, the fourth son of the Thornton family. Mia's younger brother."
Prompted by Naomi, the memory slowly resurfaced for Maeve.
There had been an incident. She had saved a guy just to keep Jasper Jett's club out of legal trouble.
Maeve looked at Naomi, waiting for an explanation.
Naomi let out an awkward laugh. "Forgot to mention. My mom and Mia's mom are cousins."
"So technically, on my mom's side, Mia is my older cousin."
Mia was a natural socialite and quickly treated Maeve like part of the inner circle.
"I heard you played a huge part in helping Naomi reunite with her biological parents."
"Also, I totally watched the live stream of you representing Aethelburg University in the Intelligent Competition."
Mia gave Maeve a thumbs up.
"You've got some serious skills for your age. I'm rooting for you."
Just as Maeve assumed Mia was about to use her connection with Naomi to pitch some sort of business partnership...
A handsome young man walked over, sporting a bright smile.
"Mia, there's a minor issue in the kitchen. I might need you to come take a look."
