"If you're going to bring up some nonsense about rekindling our past, then this conversation is over."
The fake Nancy had disgusted him to his core.
And the real Nancy wasn't doing anything to stir up feelings of nostalgia.
Life was too short. Constantly chaining oneself to the past was nothing more than a pathetic form of self-torture.
Nancy, predictably, didn't disappoint him.
She pulled a wooden box from her handbag and slid it gently across the table toward him.
Andres stared at the box without making a move.
Nancy gave a slight tilt of her chin.
"Don't you want to open it?"
After a moment of hesitation, Andres cracked the box open to reveal a folded piece of stationery.
The yellowed paper looked like it had been stored away for years.
Unfolding the aged document, he saw two sets of birth dates and astrological charts written in ink.
One set clearly belonged to him. The other, supposedly, was Nancy's.
At the bottom of the charts, elegant traditional calligraphy spelled out a few bold words:
A match made in heaven, an unbreakable alliance, endless prosperity, and five generations under one roof.
In the bottom right corner sat a red seal.
Due to the passage of time, the characters on the seal had blurred slightly.
Even so, Andres could barely make out the name stamped there: Master Mortimer Finch.
Years ago, Master Mortimer Finch had been a massive name in the world of fortune-telling.
He was practically as famous as the reclusive Master Moreno.
However, the man had passed away several years ago.
Andres looked utterly baffled.
"What is this?"
Nancy's expression turned grave.
"Things have changed. I know bringing up the past makes me sound desperate."
"To tell you the truth, my health has always been fragile. I had a weak immune system and got sick constantly."
But ever since he had fallen hopelessly in love with Maeve, every other woman in the world had simply faded into the background.
Checking his watch, Andres grew impatient.
"You've wasted twenty minutes of my time. If you can't get to the point, I'm leaving."
Wiping away her tears, Nancy dropped the damsel-in-distress act.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to cry. I'm just mourning the past we could have had."
"The person who forced me to leave you was my mother."
"At the time, she wanted me to form a marriage alliance with the Fulton family."
"She threatened me. She said if I didn't obey her, she would stop my medical treatments."
"Faced with life and death, I had no choice but to go against my heart and say those cruel things to you."
But times had changed. Andres no longer cared why Nancy had left.
They missed their chance. They simply weren't meant to be.
Besides, he already had someone he wanted to protect with his life.
