Benjamin stared deeply into her eyes.
"Are you falling for him?"
"That's completely irrelevant right now," she deflected smoothly.
He chuckled softly.
"Alright, consider it dropped. Christmas is right around the corner."
Her heart gave a tiny, imperceptible flutter.
"I'm looking forward to the present you're wrapping up for me."
A brutal edge sharpened his gaze.
"I promise you won't be disappointed."
He turned and left, taking Daisy, Jaroen, and his entire heavily armed entourage with him.
Maeve lingered at the abandoned compound for a moment longer.
She pulled out her phone and dialed Andres's number again. This time, the signal jammer was gone, and the call went straight through.
When his phone buzzed, he was currently rushing across town to track down Master Moreno.
Since Mortimer Finch had been close with Master Moreno, he was hoping to dig up some answers.
"Maeve? I thought you were hanging out with Naomi Lowell today."
"We just split up," she said casually. "Where are you? Do you want to meet up?"
He was genuinely thrilled she had taken the initiative to ask him out.
But glancing at the suburban landscape blurring past his window, he had no choice but to turn her down.
"I can't right now."
Her brow furrowed slightly.
"Meeting someone?"
"Yeah," he replied, keeping his tone carefully neutral. "I am."
Normally, she would have let it go right there.
But today, she desperately needed to hear him tell the truth.
"Who are you meeting?"
Her unusual persistence caught him completely off guard.
She rarely pried into his personal business. Why the sudden interrogation?
She had paraded around with a stolen heart for long enough. It was finally time to make her pay in blood for her sins.
Miles away, Andres stared blankly at his phone, a knot forming in his stomach.
Was he imagining things, or did she sound incredibly hurt?
He cursed himself for not asking why she suddenly wanted to see him.
"Mr. Andres, are you sure you shouldn't tell her about your meeting with Nancy?"
Murray's voice snapped him back to reality.
"Are you lecturing me on lying to Maeve?"
Murray rarely looked this serious.
"Her intelligence is off the charts. We can't even begin to guess what she knows."
"And I've got a really bad feeling about this. Nancy didn't just come back to say hello; she's here to blow everything up."
"You saw those four elite guards she had with her today, right?"
"They were radiating pure, lethal intent."
"When you two were close back in the day, she never traveled with that kind of firepower."
