Divorce Failed My Wife's Secret Identities Shock the World novel Chapter 99

He'd wanted to ask for a while. The background report on Maeve didn't match the person in front of him.

Without turning around, Maeve said, "You already know. Small town, farm work. Look at my hands, calluses don't come from nothing."

"When I was a kid, we were broke. I took whatever jobs I could just to eat. If you didn't work, you didn't get fed."

"And if you didn't finish what you were assigned for the day, some crooked boss would scream at you, and make sure you paid for it."

Andres's brow creased. "With your personality, what crooked boss would dare lay a hand on you?"

If anything, he could picture her doing the bullying.

Maeve made a face. "I was little. I didn't know how to fight back. Let him try it now."

Andres's mind supplied an image he didn't want: young Maeve in worn-out clothes, taking hits from some bloated, cruel man just for the money to buy food.

He didn't know why, but the thought made his chest ache.

He was still stuck in it when Maeve suddenly picked up her pace.

With his injured leg, Andres could only hobble after her.

When he pushed through the brush and saw what lay ahead, he stopped dead.

The "island" wasn't just wilderness.

It was an abandoned military installation—left to rot for years.

An old training ground. Rusting structures. And scattered equipment, some of it still in surprisingly good condition.

Maeve had made a beeline for a helicopter.

From the outside, it looked like a corpse, metal stained and eaten with rust.

She grinned at him and waved. "Look! There's a helicopter!"

Andres's instincts kicked in. "Check for a radio. If we can contact the authorities—"

Maeve ignored him completely, climbing in and poking around like she'd found a new toy.

While she rummaged in the cockpit, Andres studied the base.
