After seeing off the last of their guests, Wiona and Conrad prepared to leave as well.
Grandma Julia held her hand, reluctant to let go.
“I heard all about what happened tonight. Were you scared?”
“You just let them go like that? I’m still fuming!”
She shot a resentful glare at her eldest son, Mike.
“Honestly, so useless.”
“Wiona was hurt. Why didn’t you make a bigger scene?”
“You should have dragged it out to the main hall, let everyone in Stonehill see the Thompson family for who they really are!”
“How dare they sneaked into our home, trying to bully my darling girl!”
The more Grandma Julia spoke, the angrier she became, her face flushed with fury.
Mike looked paned.
“Mom, I was just…”
“Grandma, please don’t blame Uncle Mike,” Wiona said quickly.
“I was the one who told him to let them go.”
“Besides, with Ryan caught in the middle, it was difficult for him too.”
Ryan had locked himself in his room long ago, so he wasn't there to hear this.
Wiona had no reason to pretend for him, so her words were genuine.
Her cousins looked at her, moved.
They couldn't believe their little sister was already thinking of her brother’s feelings.
In that moment, they all felt a sense of relief for Ryan. It was good to know the family stood united and wouldn’t treat Ryan any differently because of the Thompsons. If anything, they just felt sorry for him.
“Hmph,” Grandma Julia snorted. “With a mother like that, she’ll eventually destroy any relationship between them!”
“When she does these things, she never once truly thinks about Ryan’s well being.”
“That poor boy…”
“Mateo, you and your brothers should spend more time with Ryan these next few days.”
“Honestly, haven’t enough tears been shed today?”
“Don’t go making Wiona sad again.”
“Wiona, Conrad, why don’t you two stay here tonight? Keep your old grandparents company?”
Wiona linked her arm with Grandma Julia’s. “Grandma, we really have to go home tonight.”
“The babies are still at home.”
At the word ‘babies,’ Grandma Julia’s eyes lit up instantly.
Grandpa Stephen’s voice boomed with excitement. “My great-grandchildren are in Stonehill? Why didn’t you bring them to see us today?”
Wiona glanced at Conrad, a little embarrassed. “Before we came over today, we weren’t sure what the situation would be like at the Blue family’s home, so we didn’t bring the babies to celebrate your birthday with you.”
“They’re still so little, so we have to be more careful.”
“Grandpa, Grandma, how about tomorrow?”
“Conrad and I have already talked about it. We’re going to move in here tomorrow and stay with you for a while.”
“Would you welcome us?”
