Juniper, who was an entire lap behind, suddenly slowed to a walk and casually strolled over to the supply station.
"What is Juniper doing?" Queenie asked, thoroughly confused.
"She is hungry," Janet smiled, pressing her lips together. "Hahaha, she's such a little foodie."
Sure enough, just as Janet spoke, they saw Juniper twist the cap off a bottle of water, tilt her head back, and chug several mouthfuls.
Instead of leaving after she drank, she turned to the volunteer.
"Do you have any plain vanilla cupcakes? I really hate strawberry."
Volunteer: "Huh?"
She debated whether she should kindly remind this girl that the race was in its final, most intense stage. If she didn't start running now, the competition would be over.
But then she thought about it.
Oh, right. She was so far behind anyway. Rather than wasting her energy for nothing, she might as well grab a snack.
"Yes, we do!" The volunteer, a sweet little freshman, quickly pulled a vanilla cupcake from a box underneath the table.
"Thanks." Juniper took it and offered her a soft smile.
"No problem." The girl blushed fiercely, feeling as though she'd just been hit by a spring breeze. She was totally flustered.
"Hahaha, what on earth is Juniper doing?" The pre-med students roared with laughter.
"She knows she's dead last and can't run anymore, so she dropped the act."
"Talked a big game and ended up in last place. Hilarious."
"And she still has the nerve to eat? If I were her, I'd want the ground to swallow me whole."
"Where are the CS students now? Weren't they acting all tough a minute ago? Let's see you act tough now!"
Sheryl watched Juniper casually snacking on the sidelines and frowned hard.
She genuinely had no idea what Shanley saw in her.
Just a pretty, useless vase!
The CS students kept their eyes glued to Juniper, feeling like her behavior was way too out of character.
Logically speaking, she wasn't the type to just give up on a competition.
Just as everyone was drowning in confusion, Juniper finished the cupcake, set down her water bottle, and meticulously wiped the corners of her mouth.
Then, under the bewildered gazes of the entire crowd, she stepped back onto the track.
