"Later on, we found out the person pulling the strings was Luminary."
Luminary's ruthless tactics struck terror into the hearts of everyone in the financial world.
If the Schwartz Group hadn't possessed such incredibly deep pockets, she probably would have destroyed them entirely.
"I remember thinking, when did I ever offend Luminary? Why does she only target the Schwartz Group and ignore everyone else?"
"Oh."
Juniper's lips curled into a sly, fox-like grin. "You didn't ask, so I didn't tell."
She was just trying to save him from a broken heart! Being relentlessly hunted by someone you couldn't even bring yourself to hate—how agonizing must that have been?
"Mr. Schwartz, you aren't going to hold a grudge, are you?" Juniper raised an eyebrow, her tone unapologetically bold. "Sure, I made a ton of money off you, but I spent all of it funding my operations to keep hunting you down!"
"So technically, I broke even!"
Seeing her soft, mischievous smile, whatever lingering frustration Shanley felt instantly vanished.
So after all that, it was his fault she hadn't managed to keep the profits?
Fine.
With that silver tongue of hers, she could convince a jury that black was white.
"I'm not mad." Shanley picked up a jacket and gently draped it over her shoulders, pulling her into his arms for a warm embrace. "If you wanted to kill me, I'd hand you the knife. What's a little stock market raiding between us?"
"Good point."
Juniper nodded. She went up on her tiptoes and pressed a soft kiss to the corner of his mouth. "Then we're even."
"Deal."
Everyone else in the room was speechless.
Billions of dollars in deliberate financial sabotage, completely forgiven over a single kiss?!
Tsk tsk tsk.
Felton and Flint couldn't even bear to watch. Even Luella felt a pang of sympathy for the Schwartz Group.
It was a good thing Juniper genuinely loved the man. If she had been even slightly less attached, his company would have been utterly ruined by now.
...
Wraithfall Mountain.
True to its name, the fortress was hidden deep within a treacherous mountain range, bordered by a dark, silent lake and perpetually shrouded in thick fog.
Nestled in a hidden valley was a sprawling, self-contained compound featuring towering high-rises.
