Isabelle sighed, thinking it was way too fancy.
Tired from the trip, Isabelle dropped her luggage and collapsed onto the sofa, dozing off almost immediately.
"Mrs. Cross, I've unpacked your suitcase. Please call me if you need anything," Tiana said from near the closet where she was neatly putting away Isabelle's things. Her own suitcase sat untouched nearby.
"Huh? Oh, no, that's okay. I can manage. Don't worry about me," Isabelle said, hurriedly sitting up. She still wasn't used to being called "Mrs. Cross." It felt strange.
But Tiana had already finished.
Isabelle just accepted it, kind of resigned.
The doorbell rang.
Tiana quickly went to answer it.
Isabelle sighed and flopped back down on the sofa, facing away from the door. Did Damian hire this secretary just for me?
She felt like she was just brought here with nothing to do.
The sound at the door stopped, replaced by the soft thud of dress shoes and the quiet roll of suitcase wheels.
"Tired?" came Damian's voice.
"Huh?" Isabelle, who had just closed her eyes, opened them and turned to look over her shoulder.
Tiana was gone. In her place stood Damian.
Isabelle sat up straight, clutching a cushion, her mind completely blank. I'm toast.
Damian didn't explain why he was there. He just started unpacking his luggage and hanging his clothes in the closet, acting like it was perfectly natural.
So, Tiana was just a cover. That confirmed her suspicion. Tiana really was the secretary Damian hired for her, to make things "easier."
Her briefly settled nerves were right back on edge.
"If you're tired, go rest in the bedroom. We'll go out for dinner in a couple of hours," he said, settling onto the sofa beside her. He opened his laptop, put on a Bluetooth headset, and got to work.
"Okay," she replied, feeling awkward. She didn't dare go to the bedroom, afraid he might follow, which would be even more awkward.
The memory of his flushed state yesterday morning and his whispered "I want you..." flashed in her mind, making her face heat up.
"I'm not tired," she said instead, picking up her phone and pretending to be busy.
She sent a message to Caroline, "Mom, bringing my husband over for dinner tomorrow."
Caroline asked, "You're in Solvenia already?"
Isabelle replied, "Yeah!"
A video call request from Caroline popped up immediately.
Isabelle panicked and hit decline.
Damian glanced up at her.
"You... you were in a meeting?!" she asked, surprised. He's that quiet in meetings too?!
So, what is he doing over here?
This is a disaster. My usual easy-going confidence is completely frozen solid around him.
