Sylvia had clearly come prepared today. This could only mean Eugene had tipped her off in advance!
Not only had he gotten her fired from the company, but he had also joined forces with an outsider to bully his own family. In that instant, Gladys’s resentment toward Eugene far outweighed anything she felt toward Sylvia.
She wanted revenge—she was determined to get it!

Evelyn was distracted at work. It had been over ten days since Mrs. Winters’s birthday. Although Mrs. Winters was still as warm and attentive as ever—if not more so—Eugene hadn’t contacted her once.
The phone call she’d received that morning just made her more uneasy.
After a moment’s hesitation, she took out her phone and called Mrs. Winters.
Mrs. Winters’s excited voice came through the line. “Evelyn, are you at work?”
Evelyn smiled. “Yes, I am.”
Mrs. Winters’s voice grew even softer and more careful. “Did you need something?”
Evelyn said, “I received the clothes you sent from the boutique. Thank you, Madame.”
“Oh, don’t be silly. We’ll be family soon. Of course I want to take care of you,” Mrs. Winters replied kindly.
Evelyn let out a self-mocking laugh. “Please don’t say that, Madame. Mr. Winters hasn’t reached out to me at all since that day. I can tell he doesn’t like me. So please, don’t buy me anything else. Let’s just pretend... none of this ever happened.”
Mrs. Winters sounded flustered. “Evelyn, you’ve misunderstood. Eugene has just been incredibly busy lately—so busy that sometimes he doesn’t even come home. He truly isn’t ignoring you on purpose. In fact, he was the one who asked me to get you those clothes.”
Evelyn gave a skeptical laugh. “Really? Because this morning Gladys called me and said Mr. Winters is still seeing Sylvia. She told me to stay away from him.”
Mrs. Winters was momentarily stunned, but quickly protested, “That’s impossible! Eugene’s been completely tied up with work lately—he hasn’t had a moment to see Sylvia. And he told me himself that he already broke up with her. Don’t listen to anything Gladys says!”
Evelyn fell silent.
