Elliot stormed into the house in two strides, stepping right over the broken door on the floor.
He swung his fist straight at Calder's temple.
The punch whistled through the air.
If it landed, Calder would be dead or permanently disabled.
"Captain! Don't be rash!"
The young officer behind him was scared out of his wits.
He quickly grabbed Elliot around the waist, holding on for dear life.
"Captain, he's a suspect! You can't hit him! You can't! If you kill him, you're finished too!"
"Let go of me!"
Elliot's eyes were bloodshot, the veins on his forehead bulging.
"Even if it costs me this uniform, I'm going to kill this animal today!"
"He dared to touch her! How dare he touch her?!"
Calder was stunned.
He was used to throwing his weight around, but he'd never encountered someone this ferocious.
And the man looked vaguely familiar.
That air of authority... was he a cop?
"You... you're the police?"
Calder shrank back, blustering to hide his fear.
"Police brutality! The cops are breaking the law!"
"My dad's the town chief! This is Fenwick territory!"
"You lay a hand on me, and I'll make sure you never leave this town!"
"Smack!"
A crisp slap echoed through the room.
It wasn't Elliot.
It was the young officer who had been trying to restrain him. He couldn't hold back any longer and had backhanded Calder across the face.
"Shut your damn mouth!"
The young officer looked at him with disgust.
"Town chief? Fenwick territory? Open your damn eyes and look outside!"
Calder clutched his face and instinctively glanced out the window.
In the yard, the flashing red and blue lights of police cars pierced the pitch-black night of the mountain village.
The once-lively banquet was now in shambles.
Seven or eight heavily armed special police officers were pinning several people to the ground.
One of them, being shoved face-down in the dirt, was his own arrogant father—Edmund Fenwick.
"Dad…"
Calder was dumbfounded.
Elliot took a deep breath, forcing down the bloodthirsty impulse rising within him.
