“Not enough?” Serena raised an eyebrow. “Right. You were once a Hart, after all, used to the finer things. But if you help me with something, I’ll give you ten million when it’s done. I can even get you back into the lab.”
Cassian finally looked up. “What do you want?”
Serena smiled. “I want you to help me ruin Grace.”
She knew it. Everyone has a price. If they don't, it just means you haven't offered enough.
At the mention of that name, Cassian put down his food.
“Who did you say?”
“Grace.” Serena didn’t notice anything amiss and continued, lost in her own thoughts. “I know you hate her. If it weren’t for her, the Hart family wouldn’t have gone bankrupt, and you wouldn’t have ended up like this. She’s shining so brightly now, but she couldn’t care less if you live or die. Tsk, tsk, a person like that is just…”
Before she could finish, Cassian cut her off.
“Get out!”
Serena was taken aback. “What did you say?”
“I said, get out!”
Cassian suddenly stood up, snatched the check from the table, tore it to shreds, and threw the pieces in Serena’s face.
Serena’s eyes widened in disbelief. “Are you crazy? That was a million dollars! You could sell worthless books in here for a lifetime and never make that much money!”
“Money?”
Cassian let out a laugh that was more painful than a grimace.
He advanced on Serena, his voice raw with emotion.
“Do you know what my biggest regret in life is?”
“It’s not the Hart family going bankrupt, and it’s not becoming a broke nobody.”
“It’s that I forgot she was my own sister. As her brother, not only did I fail to protect her, I helped outsiders bully her.”
Cassian’s eyes were bloodshot, and his voice trembled uncontrollably.
