The holidays were just a month away, but Graceline Technologies was still bustling with activity.
Grace was reviewing the year-end financial statements while Ivy Dawson sat on the sofa, mindlessly snacking on a bowl of almonds and complaining about the weirdo she'd met on a recent blind date.
"You have no idea. The guy actually asked if we could not hire a nanny after we get married. He said a nanny wouldn't be as nurturing, and I should raise the kids myself."
Ivy rolled her eyes. "So I asked him, 'Then can you stop breathing? You're polluting the environment.' Then I just grabbed my bag and left. There are so many obnoxious guys with inflated egos these days."
Grace couldn't help but laugh. "You and your sharp tongue. Be careful, or you'll never get married."
"I, for one, am destined to be a strong, independent woman. I'm not about to let love get in my way!"
Just as Ivy tossed a sunflower seed into her mouth, there was a knock on the office door.
The assistant's voice was hesitant. "Ms. Hart, that Ms. Shum is here again…"
Grace's smile vanished instantly.
Serena.
That woman just wouldn't give up.
After Grace had rejected her partnership proposal last time, she had stayed away for a while. It was unexpected to see her show up again before the holidays.
"Let her in."
Grace closed the folder, adjusted her posture, and slipped back into her cool, professional demeanor.
Ivy didn't leave. She sat on the sofa, nursing a cup of coffee, settled into a more comfortable position, and prepared to watch the show.
The door was pushed open.
Today, Serena was wearing a white cashmere coat over a long, pale purple dress. Her makeup was exquisite, and she looked every bit the part of a wealthy socialite.
"Ms. Hart, I hope I'm not interrupting?"
Serena walked in with a beaming smile.
