“Adolphus, Laurinda, what brings you by?”
Before he could finish speaking, Irvin stepped out of the car. The butler hesitated, surprised to see Irvin returning home as well.
“Irvin, you’re back too…”
Irvin’s gaze was sharp, his tone edged with authority—a seriousness that made him seem startlingly mature. “How’s Grandfather’s health?” he asked.
The butler quickly composed himself. “He’s recovering well, sir. Please, all of you, come inside.” He led them away from the drive and into the courtyard, sensing that this wasn’t the place for conversation.
As they walked, Irvin said quietly to him, “Adolphus heard Grandfather wasn’t well and came to look in on him. Laurinda’s here to visit too. Tell the kitchen to prepare something for everyone. Make it a little special tonight.”
The butler caught the message immediately and hurried off to arrange it.
Irvin led Adolphus and Laurinda to Jed’s private quarters.
Inside, Jed was sharing tea with several old friends. Hearing footsteps, he looked up, eyes brightening briefly when he saw Adolphus and Laurinda. But the spark faded just as quickly, replaced by something like regret.
