From Ashes of Scandal to His Embrace (Laurinda) novel Chapter 71

The butler had known since early morning that there was a stranger in the house. When he heard Adolphus’s voice, he stepped out of the kitchen and greeted him with his usual calm politeness.

“Good morning, Adolphus. Breakfast is ready for you. I wasn’t sure if you preferred something Western or Chinese, so I had both prepared.”

“Thank you, that’s very thoughtful,” Adolphus replied.

He didn’t pay any attention to the uncertain look on Irvin’s face. He just nodded at the butler and followed him toward the dining room.

As soon as Adolphus walked in, his eyes landed on the bowl of medicine, still kept warm on the table.

He checked the time and realized Laurinda should probably get up and take her medicine soon. If she waited any longer, it could mess with her evening dose.

“Could you ask one of the maids to wake Laurinda? It’s best if she has her morning medicine before nine.”

The butler had already been thinking the same thing, but he hesitated. He worried Laurinda might not feel well if she didn’t get enough sleep.

“Would it be all right for her to take the medicine around noon? Laurinda never sleeps well, and she stayed up pretty late last night. I’m just concerned she’ll feel off if she doesn’t rest enough.”

He sounded genuinely concerned, so Adolphus thought about it and decided to compromise.

“Okay, let’s skip the morning dose for now. Just don’t put the medicine away yet. When it’s time for her next dose, prepare a fresh one and heat it up right before she drinks it. There’s no need to keep it warm the whole time.”

The butler realized he’d been doing it wrong and quickly threw out the medicine that had been sitting out for too long.

“Got it. I’ll make sure to remember next time.”

Adolphus nodded and took a seat at the table. While he ate, he chatted with the butler, asking about Laurinda’s favorite foods and little details about what she liked.

He listened carefully, making a mental note of everything so he could keep it in mind when he made her medicinal meals.

“You and Jasper can play. But you still haven’t answered my question. Why are you bad-mouthing Adolphus?”

Irvin hesitated, then said, “It’s nothing. I just think he’s a tricky guy. Laurinda, you really shouldn’t trust him so easily.”

He thought Laurinda was too innocent to handle someone as experienced as Adolphus. Guys like that always had something up their sleeves.

Laurinda didn’t get why Irvin was so worked up. She just laughed, looking comfortable and at ease.

“Thanks for looking out for me. Anyway, you two should get ready. A friend of mine is opening a new equestrian center today, and we’re going to have some fun. I want you to come with me.”

She was in a great mood and felt like getting out for a while. The horse she’d ordered for Jasper had also arrived, so she figured it was the perfect day to hand over her gift and celebrate.

After breakfast, Laurinda left the dining room and found Irvin and Jasper already dressed and waiting for her in the living room. She couldn’t help but tease them a little, her eyes sparkling.
