The designers started complaining immediately.

“That’s right, Ms. Hoyt! This is Mr. Walter’s house. How can just anyone wander in?”

“Ms. Hoyt, who is this person? Have someone kick her out so we can get on with the room design for your daughter!”

They were all talking at once, completely missing the way Amara’s expression was stiffening.

Jade found the whole thing utterly ridiculous. She looked straight at Amara, her voice laced with sarcasm. “Yeah, who am I? Why don’t you introduce me, Ms. Hoyt?”

Amara bit her lip, her eyes welling up.

Jade took a step closer, her gaze pinning Amara in place. “Is it because you know what you’re doing is wrong?”

Amara clenched her fists. Just then, Hudson’s voice sounded from behind them.

“What’s going on?”

Amara’s tears spilled over instantly. She ran to Hudson as if she’d suffered a great injustice. “Hudson! You said I could use this room for Cortney! But Ms. Merchant just showed up and started yelling at the designers I hired! She said what I’m doing is wrong!”

She was sobbing harder now, her hands clutching his arm tightly.

Hudson tried to pull his arm free, but she held on too tightly. Thinking she was just upset, he

let her be.

He patted her hand in a placating gesture before turning to Jade, his tone disapproving. “Jade, I’m the one who told Amara she could use this room for Cortney. If you have a problem, take it up with me. Why are you taking it out on her?”

“Fine.” Jade’s voice was thick with unshed tears. “Then let me ask you. When we moved in, didn’t I tell you I wanted to use this room as a nursery? Since I said that, why did you give it to someone else? What about your own child? If… if you had your own child, where would you be planning to put them?”

Hudson paused, confused. He didn’t remember Jade saying anything about a nursery,

If she had mentioned it, then giving the room to Cortney would have been inappropriate.

But Amara’s designers were all standing right there. Backing down now would humiliate Amara in front of them. He’d invited her to stay; he couldn’t let her be embarrassed like this.

When he spoke again, his voice was harder. “Jade, we don’t have a child. Letting Cortney use it for a while doesn’t change anything. Stop making a scene.”

He then turned to Amara. “It’s settled. Go ahead with this room for Cortney. Don’t worry about it.”

Amara sniffled, offering an explanation. “Hudson, I just… Cortney hasn’t been sleeping well at the hotel. She has nightmares. I thought a room like her old one would make her feel safer. That’s all I meant, really.”

Hudson softened his tone to comfort her, “I know. I understand. It’s not your fault.”

Amara’s distress, Hudson’s gentle comfort, the occasional glances from the designers-it all felt like knives stabbing into Jade’s heart.

She was trembling all over. One hand clutched at the fabric over her chest, the other pressed against her abdomen.

She stared at Hudson, a desperate, last-ditch determination in her eyes. “What if I said have a child of your own? Would you still give this room away?”
