"They were insulting me to my face! How was I supposed to just take that? If I had let Harold give the deal to the Walters right then, I would have been proving to everyone that the 'other woman' had won.
"I'm a daughter-in-law of the Walter family, yes, but I'm still a human being. Especially now that I'm carrying Hudson's child, I can't just let people trample over my dignity like that. So... I made that decision. I hope you can understand, Bert."
The explanation was perfectly logical and impossible to argue with.
Even a saint has a breaking point, right?
After hearing the whole story, Bert actually felt a shred of sympathy for her, though he didn't show it.
"Even so, you shouldn't have handed it to a competitor!"
Without waiting for Jade to respond, he turned his fury on Amara.
"Amara! You were supposed to be our 'in' with Harold. Why the hell were you running your mouth? I bet Harold only switched to the Fosters because he was disgusted by your stupidity!"
Hudson looked at Amara, his lips tight and a cold fire in his eyes.
"Amara, is that true?"
Caught under their accusing stares, Amara panicked and blurted out a denial.
"No! I... I never said those things."
Jade wiped a tear away and spoke softly.
"A dozen guests heard her. Bert, you can just ask around."
She knew Bert was a man who hated being lied to. He'd check.
As expected, Bert immediately sent his assistant to verify the story.
The report came back in minutes. It was exactly as Jade had said.
The liar was Amara.
Amara had told so many lies that she'd forgotten they eventually have a way of catching up to you.
She had used the "visiting a friend" excuse to get out of the asylum because she knew Bert would be there. She wanted to win him over by helping with the deal, knowing his blessing was the only way she'd ever officially marry Hudson.
But her plan had backfired spectacularly. Not only was the deal gone, but Jade had completely outplayed her.
Bert's voice was a thunderclap.
"Amara Hoyt! The truth is right here. Do you have anything left to say for yourself?"
Amara snapped out of her daze, her voice trembling as she tried to backpedal.
"Sir, I didn't... I really didn't mean..."
Slap!
Bert lost his temper and struck her across the face.
"You're a curse on this family! Killing Ronald wasn't enough? You had to come for my son too? Get the hell out—"
"Dad!" Hudson stepped in front of Amara, shielding her completely.
