She guessed Hudson’s patience ran out. He didn’t want to deal with her anymore, so he made an excuse to leave.

It had happened before. And now, with Amara and her daughter here, he had even less reason

to stay.

Sure enough, Rosa’s voice came from beside the bed a moment later. “Mrs. Walter, I’ve brought you some clam chowder.”

Jade understood, but a sharp pang still pierced her heart. She didn’t even want to move. “Just leave it there. I’ll eat it in a bit.”

“But Mr. Walter said I should watch you finish it,” Rosa insisted. “If you don’t want to move, I can feed you.”

Jade lay still for a few seconds, then removed the washcloth from her eyes and sat up. “Go wash the towel. I’ll eat it myself.”

Rosa took the towel. “The chowder is warm, not hot. You can eat it right away.”

“Okay…” Jade picked up the spoon and began eating the clam chowder slowly.

The warmth spread through her stomach, making her feel a little better, and she started to think about her next steps.

Before, her whole world had revolved around Hudson. Now, everything was off track.

First, she had to work hard and save money to prepare for the baby’s arrival.

Second, she absolutely had to divorce Hudson before she started showing.

For three years

of marriage, she’d clung to the fantasy that she could win Hudson’s heart.

It was only after Amara returned that Hudson had shattered that illusion piece by piece. His attitude toward the nursery and her mother’s ruined photo had given her the answer.

She’d spent three years failing to reach him. Now that the woman he truly cherished was back, it was time to snuff out any remaining unrealistic hopes.

As for the baby… Hudson couldn’t know. Neither could the elders of the Walter family.

If they found out, there were only two outcomes: they’d force her to terminate the pregnancy, or they’d order her to have the child.

Her marriage to Hudson was over; divorce was inevitable.

The Walter family valued their bloodline. If she divorced Hudson, they would never let her take the child.

Hudson and Amara would be together, and they already had Cortney. How would they treat her child?

No matter what, she had to divorce Hudson before she started showing. That was the only way to keep her baby.

Her mother was gone. Her father had a new family, and his focus was entirely on Cindy and Robert.

The baby growing inside her was her only family in this world.

I have to… I have to keep my baby.

Finishing the bowl of chowder, Jade felt her chaotic thoughts of the last few days settle into a plan.

There was one more very important thing she needed to do: a prenatal checkup.

She’d looked it up online. Many people said that if the mother was under extreme stress, it could greatly affect the baby,

Her emotions had been all over the place lately. She didn’t know if the baby was okay, She needed to make time to see a doctor soon.

Rosa came back from washing the towel. Seeing Jade had finished the chowder, she cleared the tray and pulled up a chair beside the bed.

Rosa hesitated, then spoke up, “Mrs. Walter, I’m not sure if I should say

this…”

“Go ahead,” Jade said, pushing her thoughts aside.

Rosa looked at her earnestly. “I know you and Mr. Walter have been fighting over Ms. Hoyt and Cortney lately. And yes, Mr. Walter does seem to care about them a lot. But they’re only staying here for a little while. They’ll leave.”
