Hudson stood by the window in the second-floor study, a lit cigarette between his fingers, its red tip glowing brightly in the dark.
After a moment, someone knocked on the study door.
“Come in,” Hudson said, turning around.
He walked over and sat down in his chair as the family doctor, James Hymes, entered and stopped in front of the desk.
“You asked to see me, Mr. Walter?”
Earlier, James had gotten a call from Rosa saying Jade was unwell and had immediately grabbed his medical bag to head over.
But halfway there, Rosa had suddenly called back to tell him not to come. Confused, he’d gone home and was about to go to bed when Hudson himself called, asking him to come.
In all his years as the Walter family’s private physician, this was a first. Worried it might be serious, he’d thrown his clothes back on and rushed over.
Hudson exhaled smoke. The rising cloud blurred his features, making the gloom in his eyes harder to read. “The last time you came to examine Jade, did anything unpleasant happen?”
Seeing Hudson’s serious expression, James thought carefully.
After a long moment, he came to a conclusion. “It was just a routine check-up. Nothing unusual.”
Hudson watched James for a few seconds, then looked away. “Alright. You can go,”
James was baffled. He scratched the back of his neck and left the room, bewildered,
Are Mr. and Mrs. Walter fighting? Is Mr. Walter taking it out on me?
Once the door closed, Hudson stubbed out his cigarette and pulled out his phone to call Kevin, “Check if Jade has been to any hospitals recently. If she has, get me the reports immediately.”
“Yes, sir,” Kevin replied.
“Also,” Hudson added, “look into a place called Memoria Script Studio. They specialize in artifact restoration.”

The next day, Jade went to clock in at the Memoria Script Studio on time. There weren’t any major projects at the moment, but even the smaller tasks received her patient, meticulous
attention.
Work wasn’t something you rushed. She hadn’t touched historical document restoration for years and needed to ease back into it slowly.
Her salary would increase gradually too. Little by little, as long as things were moving in the right direction, that was enough.
At noon, Jade took some time off to go to the hospital for her prenatal check-up.
Following the doctor’s instructions, she went through all the tests. With the report in hand, she went to the doctor’s office. As soon as she sat down, she brought up her recent emotional ups and downs.
The doctor smiled reassuringly, “While a mother’s emotions can have some effect on the baby, babies aren’t as fragile as you might think. Just try to be more mindful.”
Jade’s heart, which had been in her throat, finally settled. “I understand. Thank
you, doctor.”
The doctor looked over her report. “Everything looks fine here. Remember to eat plenty of vegetables and fruit for the vitamins.”
Then, his gaze swept over Jade’s slightly tired face, and he added, “Pregnancy is hard work. Try to stay as happy and relaxed as possible. Don’t overthink things.”
Warmth spread through Jade’s chest. She nodded firmly. “Okay, Thank you.”
Leaving the office with the report, the doctor’s words echoed in her mind.
I have to stay in a good mood. Don’t overthink. Focus on work and saving money. Keep the pregnancy a secret. Find a way to divorce Hudson. Take it one step at a time.
Looking at the positive words in the report, Jade felt much better. At least the baby hadn’t been affected by her turmoil.
From now on, she had to remember not to get so worked up. She needed to stay calm.
She folded the report and was about to put it in her bag when a voice called out from behind
her.
