Chapter 28 Take Jade’s Goodness for Granted
“Why?” Charles asked, genuinely puzzled.

In the past, Jade would have been over the moon to get Hudson’s attention. Charles thought he’d given her a chance on his own. There was no reason for her to turn it down.
“He’s busy. I didn’t want to bother him with something so small,” Jade explained.
That made sense to Charles. While Jade longed for Hudson’s care and attention, that desire came with a big condition: it couldn’t be a burden to him.
Jade was always considerate, sometimes to a fault.
Looking at her downcast eyes, Charles thought of his own mischievous little sister. If his sister were half as well-behaved as Jade, life would be so much easier. But people needed to have a spine, or they’d get walked all over.
“Jade,” Charles said earnestly, “sometimes you need to think about yourself more. Don’t always just go along with what Hudson wants.”
Jade was surprised he’d say that to her. A flicker of astonishment showed in her eyes, and she was momentarily at a loss for words.
“Okay… thanks for the advice,” she said, her expression awkward.
She checked her watch. It was almost time to head to the Memoria Script Studio. “Charles, I have to go. Bye.”
Charles waved back. “Bye,”
He stood there, watching Jade’s slender figure walk away. She was wearing a loose chiffon blouse. In the breeze, she looked like she might blow away.
Why is she so thin? Coming to the hospital and not even daring to tell anyone… is Hudson mistreating her?
The more he thought about it, the more he disliked the idea of Hudson bullying her. He pulled out his phone and called Hudson.
“Hey, Hudson, how exactly are you treating Jade at home? She looks miserable.”
In his office, Hudson was blindsided by Charles’ accusations. His brow furrowed. “Charles, are you sleepwalking or did you lose your mind? What are you talking about?”

Charles scoffed, “You’re not bullying her? Then why is she too scared to even tell you she went to the hospital?”
The hospital? Hudson remembered what Jade had said last night. She’d said she was afraid of doctors. And the very next day, she went to the hospital by herself?
His eyes darkened. “You saw her at the hospital?”
“Yep,” Charles said, and launched into a tirade. “I asked her why you weren’t with her. She said you were busy and she didn’t want to bother you with a small thing. If you weren’t pushing her around all the time, would she be like this?”
Before Hudson could respond, Charles continued, “I have to say, you take Jade’s goodness for granted. You’d better be careful, or one day she’ll have had enough and leave you high and dry. Then what will you do?”
Hudson let out a cold laugh.
“What are you-” Charles started.
“Shut up,” Hudson said and hung up.
He was about to call Kevin in and have him look into why Jade went to the hospital secretly when there was a knock on the door.
Hudson said, “Come in.”
Kevin entered and reported, “Mr. Walter, we couldn’t finalize the deal with Mr. Kelso, I’ve scheduled a meeting with their overseas lead. You’ll need to fly out tonight.”
Hudson nodded. “Alright,”
This overseas project was crucial for the Walter Group’s future. He needed to get there fast. Jade’s issue would have to wait,
That afternoon, Hudson went back to the villa,
Jade walked in to find him by the floor-to-ceiling window, on the phone.
He wore a black dress shirt, half-tucked into his suit pants, his frame tall and lean. The evening light silhouetted his broad shoulders and narrow waist-the perfect proportions.
There was a time when Jade would have spent all day with her sketchpad, drawing him, never getting tired of it.
