After his wound was dressed, Hudson headed upstairs. Amara had prepared a pot of coffee and was pouring a cup for Emily.

“Emily, please, have some coffee,” Amara said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness.

Emily Walter gave her a sidelong glance, her sharp eyes cutting right through the girl’s facade in an instant.

“Don’t waste your energy.”

Amara froze, a tight smile forced onto her face. Her hand trembled as she set the coffee cup down on the marble tabletop.

“I’m sorry… I don’t think I follow you, Emily.”

Emily let out a short, biting laugh, her words designed to draw blood.

“You think because Hudson and Jade are over, there’s a vacancy for you? Not in a million years.”

Amara bit her lip, the humiliation burning in her chest.

“I… I believe I’m every bit the woman Jade was.”

If Amara wanted to volunteer for an insult, Emily was more than happy to oblige.

“Jade’s family wasn’t much, but at least she was respectable. As for you…”

Emily’s gaze traveled slowly from Amara’s head to her toes, her expression full of open distaste.

‘Lyndon Spenser? Ronald Faith? I’ve lost track of which man is actually your husband.”

Amara’s face went ghastly pale. Her fingers dug into the leather of the sofa, her heart hammering with a sudden, sharp anxiety.

She wondered, with a jolt of terror, exactly how much Emily Walter knew.

Seeing her silence, Emily continued in a voice like ice.

‘Hudson might be a divorcee now, and his value on the market has taken a hit, but this family still has standards. We don’t just let anyone through the front door.”

Emily adjusted her silk shawl and rose from the sofa with a graceful, practiced ease. Even her retreating back radiated contempt for Amara.

Amara felt the sting of the insult deep in her bones. She ground her teeth together, her jaw aching with suppressed rage.

Why is Jade good enough, but I’m not?

‘m ten times the woman she is! This old bat doesn’t know a thing!

She tried to comfort herself, but the fire in her lungs only burned hotter the more she thought about it.

It wasn’t enough.

None of this was enough.

As long as Jade existed, she was a shadow over Amara’s life.

Fuming, Amara walked to a secluded corner of the foyer and dialed Cindy Merchant’s number.

“Jade and Hudson are officially divorced. I want you to destroy her. Break her completely! I want her to spend the rest of her life as a pariah, rotting in the shadows!”

Upstairs, in the study.

Hudson stood before his father, his expression a mask of perfect, chilling calm.

“You called me up here. What is it?”

Bert Walter sat with his hands behind his back, ignoring Hudson’s tone with the air of a man who held all the cards.

“If you ask me, a woman who brings nothing to your career and only drags you down should have been cut loose years ago. In a few days, Mr. Willie Whitaker’s daughter is arriving-”

“If you’re planning a strategic alliance, don’t waste your breath. I’m not interested, and I’m not agreeing to it.” Hudson’s voice was a flat, dangerous rasp.

“Has the Walter Group become so pathetic that we have to trade my marriage for a seat at the table?”

Bert didn’t fly into a rage; instead, he offered a deal.

“If you can secure a partnership with the KOE Financial Group, I’ll drop the Whitaker girl. If you can’t, you meet her. No arguments.”

Hudson didn’t hesitate. He knew his own worth.

“I’ve already made contact with Anderson, the Chief Assistant. He said Mr. Howell is tied up with other affairs for the moment but will reach out when he’s free.

“In this city, we are the only firm capable of maximizing their returns. Howell is a businessman; he knows we’re the only logical choice. He won’t go anywhere else.”

Bert nodded slowly. “Then we have a deal?”

Regardless of the outcome, Bert knew he won. Either Hudson expanded the firm’s global reach, or he married into more power.

Hudson saw no possibility of failure, so he took the bait.

“Fine.”
