Chapter 295 The Jealousy
But her focus was fractured. Her hand with the tweezers was shaking.
She couldn’t work like this.
She set the tools down and stared into space, letting her mind go blank.
She hated to admit it, but Hudson’s words had rattled her.
He was stirring up the waters again, and she had a terrible premonition that something was about to break.

Jade snapped back to reality and looked toward the door. It was Bastian.
“I thought Katherine said you were buried in meetings today.”
Bastian loosened his tie and sat beside her.
“Security told me your ex-husband was here. What did he want?”
He always referred to Hudson as “your ex-husband,” as if the man didn’t have a name.
Jade noticed the pattern, but she was too tired to analyze it. She thought of the confrontation in the garden and felt a wave of
exhaustion.
“It was nothing…”
Bastian’s hand, resting on his knee, twitched. The next second, he stood up and pulled Jade with him.
Jade looked at him, confused.
“What is it?”
“I’m taking you somewhere,” Bastian said, pulling her toward the door.
An hour later, they were in the Southern Suburbs.
They stepped out of the car, and a sea of blooming sunflowers hit Jade’s vision.
The sky was cloudless. The sunflowers stretched out from a central point, a carpet of gold that went on for miles.
The vibrant green leaves and brilliant petals were full of a life that made the gloom in Jade’s heart start to lift.
The shadows on her face vanished. She smiled and grabbed her skirt, jogging toward the edge of the field.
Bastian smiled, tucking his hands into his pockets as he followed her with lazy, powerful strides.
“You haven’t changed. Whenever you were upset as a little girl, you’d beg your mother to take you to see the sunflowers. You always felt better after.”
Jade had been leaning in to smell a flower. She stood up and stared at him.

“How could you possibly know that?”
“I know a lot of things about you, Jade.” Bastian closed the distance.
He stepped in until the toes of his shoes were touching hers.
“Would you like the chance to find out more?”
Jade met his gaze. The eyes she had always thought of as peaceful as the sea were beginning to look dark and predatory.
She took an instinctive step back, though her smile didn’t fade.
“I’m learning now, aren’t I?”
Before she could take another step, Bastian’s arm hooked around her waist: She was jerked forward, slamming into his solid chest.
Jade gasped, her hands coming up to push him away, but he only held her tighter.
She was so small in his arms, her head barely reaching his chin. It felt as if he were trying to pull her into his very skin.
The scent of him-powerful, masculine, and clean-filled her senses. Her heart began to hammer against her ribs, a flush of heat rising from her neck to her ears.
“Bastian…”
“I saw him hug you,” Bastian whispered in her ear. Jade went still.
“Don’t forget, you’re my fiancé. I told you I’d give you time to accept me, but you’re divorced now. He’s nothing to you. He’s a stain on your past. Don’t let him touch you again. It makes me jealous.”
Jade’s mind was spinning. “But-”
Bastian lowered his head, burying his face in the crook of her neck. His hot breath sent a shiver down her spine.
“Do you really not want me to hold you? He’s your past. I’m your future. If he can touch you, why can’t I?”
He’d reached his limit.
The patience, the calculated distance… it had all shattered the moment he saw another man’s hands on her.
Joshua Boswell wasn’t the only one who had been watching her from the shadows.
But three years ago, when he heard she’d married, he’d forced himself to stop looking. He’d buried himself in the family firm, trying to drown the memory of her.
